It's time we ban pitbulls
Enough is enough. These dogs are way too strong & unpredictable. Plus, they are normally owned by the wrong people. Deadly combo right there.
This latest pitbull attack is absolutely heartbreaking. A 14-month-old Wisconsin boy has died after a brutal attack by a pair of pit bulls, authorities said on Thursday. Police received a call from Susan Iwicki, 30, on Wednesday saying that she and the young boy were being attacked by the dogs, according to local NBC affiliate WMTV. Iwicki told police that she and the boy had each sustained injuries. The boy died of his injuries at a Milwaukee area hospital later on Wednesday, the Walworth County sheriff’s office said, according to The Associated Press. The boy had the “biggest eyes, great smile,” family friend Valerie Brylow told local affiliate WTMJ. “He was a great little boy.” “He is adorable, absolutely adorable,” Nicole Jennison, another family friend told the station. The boy’s name has not been released, and an investigation continues. Both of the pit bulls were removed from the property and euthanized on Wednesday, WMTV reported. The fatal dog attack was the first in Wisconsin in a decade, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013...lling-him?lite |

I have a neighbor 2 doors down that has a bernese mountain dog and she's a sweetie. just beautiful. I'd take one in a heartbeat if a rescue opportunity or something presented itself....but my first choice is and always will be a bullmastiff. best dogs ever IMO. loving and protective, just awesome. mastiffs most certainly have a drool problem. with bullmastiffs it's hit and miss. Tank was huge...his head was just HUGE, so he had more of a problem than Dozer does...but in comparison to mastiffs it's not much. when they initially walk away from the water bowl it's not so good. we have towels in every room for a just in case....but bullmastiffs don't walk around slobbering everywhere like mastiffs do. matter of fact the Tom Hands movie Hooch kinda ticked me off. that was a french mastiff which is almost exactly the same as a bully. all the slobbering going on in the movie was complete BS...so anyone who doesn't know any better would NEVER have one. on a side not....the movie See Spot Run starring David Arquette and Michael Clark Duncan has a special place in my heart because "Spot" is a bully, but aside from that....just a great funny movie.

90% of people who own pits are ****ing imbeciles
That's the problem If you are reading this and own a pit, you're not one of the 10% of above-reeruned iq pit bull enthusiasts most likely...just a pro tip

Bullshit. I've had dogs that couldn't bust a biscuit. Dogs bite hard cause they want to. It's the bite and shake that make the type do so much damage.

Glad to see you found your breed, I couldn't deal with the drool and massive dumps myself, but damn that Bernie is calling me...
Found this on a message board, thought you might find it interesting. CMD seem like the devil himself in dog form: As an owner of an 80kg 12 month male Caucasian Ovcharka puppy, and previously another male, these dogs are well yes ... dangerous if not controlled properly. Lots of training, lots of love & lots of understanding of the breed. He is sitting here at my feet at the moment waging his tail ant,d looking up at me with the love of a Baby for its mother He plays football with my 2 yr old son, and he is so gentle. BUt he has also gone through a door trying to protect the property. I have bred many breeds and lived with even more .... almost all guardian breeds ..... but the CO is the most capable protector. Agile, vicious, heavy weight, long 2 inch Ks, bite force of up to 670 PSI, unfearing, almost unstoppable (hearing story after story in the CO community), clever fighters too (in and out like a boxer). I, being an owner, would NEVER enter a house with a free Ovcharka I did not know well, whether female or male. Their skin is extremely thick and supple, double coated long fur, and just enough excess skin ... ll of this acts like armor. To give an idea we were walking through the woods a few months ago and this 4 yr old pitbull rushed out of the trees and hit my OC on the shoulder hard then proceeded to try and rip the crap out of him. The pitbull had every intent on ripping the throat out. My 10 month old CO at the time just started waging his tail and jumping around playing. Really like they were old friends. The pitbull continued to rip at my dog with no effect .... in fact the PB was getting insanely angry I assume because his vicious advances were being met with playfulness. I let this carry on for 20-30 seconds until a young couple came crashing out of the woods screaming at their dog and trying to apologize at the same time until they stopped in their tracks. Seeing my CO's size (78cm at the shoulder) they stood there looking confused and a little scared. I told them not to worry he thinks your pitbull is playing. I don't know any dog that can match a good fully grown male CO. They are very definition of the white shark of the dog world, used to taking on bears & killing the largest grey wolves fearlessly. They are what burglars dream about in their nightmares. We bite checked him today with a chap who breeds and trains the Belgium Shepherds for the US border patrols. When he saw my CO he was a little scared (note he is only 12 months old). Bite training went brilliantly for the first 2 minutes, until Mike (the trainer) hit me with the prop whip and my CO caught him by the elbow (one the sleeve thank god) dragged him down and then snapped at his face. Luckily two of us were holding him or Mike would not have made another good night sleep or kept a girlfriend. There is a very old legend that says when the gods left Tibet the monks begged them to stay for who would protect them in their absence? The gods did not reply but the monks awoke the next morning with seven ovcharkas sleeping at the foot of the steps of the monastery, 3 males and 4 females, to replace the last seven gods that left the earth. It was said that the gods had mixed the strongest bears and the smartest wolves together to make the new protectors. Obviously untrue but legends are born around those that deserve it in some cases This is not a dog ... it is something more ... something intelligent and caring but totally willing to lay down its life to protect my wife and son. No man would enter my house with negative intentions and leave all the happier for coming. But this dog is almost impossible to train, strong willed like no other, & although if the blood lines are good they will never attack the family they ARE NOT for everyone. Please dont buy this breed unless you really know what you are doing with not just dogs, but the worst kinds of guardian breeds. They are not easy and deadly in the hands of most pitbull owner types. I can kick a pitbull off me ... if an OC gets loose with intent to damage I am a dead man. We have multiple gates, fences, even protocols to open the door. Takes a lot of responsibility to own a dog like this. And an added note; the tibetan mastiff has the same ancestor as the Ovcharka except the TM is not known for its strength & willing to give its life. The caucasian ovcharkas were brought over from Tibet 2,000-3,000 years ago. I hope this clears things up a little. |

They have taken the heat off the chows, and probably several other breeds of the hot canine of the moment with bad owners.

One aspect of training an alpha dog I haven't seen brought up in this thread is the importance of socialization when they're young in the first year. That's of major importance to get them ready to be able to take for a walk in the park or in the woods where they're going to encounter others.
I have no experience with training a pit bull only because I love German Sheppard's and border collies and just don't have the time for much more unless I make it a job. As mean as it may sound when you're dealing with a German Sheppard, pitdbull or mastif or whatever that is one day going to be ~100lbs dog. Stick your knee in that ****ers chest when he's 50lbs look him in the eye and don't let him up until he knows who is boss. It's a lot easier than when he can take you and other dogs. Get them early. Socialization and early dominance. They aren't people that you can reason with later on when it's too late. |

"Its the owner, not the breed" is such a disingenuous statement. As if there's some hugely disproportionate number of bad owners with pitbulls compared to bad owners with labradors.
The reality is that it is the breed. Perhaps good ownership can negate the issues, but the reason the type of owner is so important in the first place is the breed.
