Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started. Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Check 5/3/1 program. Nothing wrong with the basics to get strong and do free weight lifts for pretty much all your lifting work.

does that mean **** it, give up on this exercise and assume it's just not for you - or does it mean strengthen up some other way and then go back to the pull ups...?

It means that if you run into a wall twice, you're probably ready for a more advanced routine with longer cycles.

I did five weeks of insanity, lost 12 pounds, had to tighten my duty belt twice. I got kind of bored with it and decided to do it three times a week with weights 2-3 days a week. I only did leg weights and cardio abs today. I got done and felt like I did very little. Insanity made me feel extremely exhausted when I was done. I still sweat a lot today, just felt like my heartrate didn't fo up much.
