In all honesty the metphore they are using is legit. If you want the benefits of 2.5 Million SDGU's annually then you have to take the downside which is the 3k deaths. If you want the benefits of a car you have to take the downside potential risks associated with them also.

But - to your point - I'm going to try and respond to post 349 and defend my position.

1. I concede every statistic and every single interpretation of those statistics.

2. I still have problems with it. Why?

Here's why:

1. Okay, so you're saying 60% of those statistics are suicides. Gotcha. How many of those suicides are children or teenagers? Because the finality of suicide by self-inflicted gunshot eliminates any chance of cooler heads prevailing, or rescuing the depressed teen from their own bad judgment. Your kid hate school and takes your sleeping pills, you can get him to the hospital. He puts your .40 cal semiautomatic to his head, and it's bedtime for brainless.

2. I concede that handguns protect law abiding citizens from crime. Cool. Johnny Q. America goes to the donut shop. Ramon T. McCriminal walks in looking for a few greenbacks to buy some of the grass he snorts or whatever those bad people do. Johnny America pulls out Mr. Desert Eagle and there's one more hole in the donut shop, and one less bad guy hanging out in pool halls. Yay for handguns and yay for concealed carry.

However...

Johnny Q. America ain't doing that shit with an M4 assault rifle. He's not gonna sip on vanilla bean with cream and sugar while holding onto his fully automatic AK-47 (What American would own such a commie gun, I don't know). So, who is using these guns, if it's not Mr. Protect-the-Peace?

Here is where I think that more detailed statistics are necessary. You say the majority of gun crimes are criminals shooting criminals, right? Well, how many of the times that assault rifles are fired in public do you think are fired by law abiding citizens using legally obtained guns? How many of the assault rifles fired not at a gun range or on hunting grounds, but on city streets - how many of those rifles have serial numbers filed off? Or were bought out of the back of a van by a dude selling rock?

Lastly, as a libtard, yes, I want to make it harder to buy guns. I embrace the fact that I will probably never see a country without guns, which would be preferable. Literally, if no single gun existed on the face of this earth I'd be happy, but I don't see Penelope Cruz sucking on my balls, so this isn't Fantasy Land.

While I will not argue that we should infringe upon your (apparent) right to KEEP and BEAR arms, I would very much like to infringe upon the convenience of PURCHASING the arms that you keep and bear.

I think only members of the United States Armed Services, or Federal, State, County, or City law enforcement communities should have the legal right to BUY assault rifles. If they buy them as a gift for a friend, then godspeed. I'm not infringing on that friend's right to keep it and bear it. But I don't think he should be able to buy it.

Likewise, if you want to take the time to fill out all of the paperwork, take a gun safety class (no more than a driver's ed course) and take both the practical and written tests, then you can buy a gun. Again, it's your right to keep that gun and bear it, but if you want to BUY one then you have to show us that you are as law abiding as Pawnmower or Johnny Q. America from the donut shop.
