Chris Pratt Lands GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Lead

After countless shortlist stories and rumors concerning who would play Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the search for the lead role is finally over, and fittingly the actor is someone who never appeared on any of the aforementioned lists. Deadline reports that Chris Pratt has been tapped to play Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, a character who was born of a human mother and alien father, and is a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship. As Guardians features a cast of strange and cosmic characters, Quill was an important role to fill because he will likely act as the audience’s introduction to the vast, unfamiliar Guardians world. There were plenty of actors rumored for the role that made a lot of sense (John Krasinski, Zachary Levi, etc.), and Deadline notes that Marvel made test deals with Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Lee Pace, and Eddie Redmayne, but Chris Pratt actually seems like a perfect fit. His comic timing is excellent as evidenced by his work on NBC’s Parks and Recreation, and he’s shown his talent on the dramatic side with Moneyball and 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty, for which he also proved that he can beef up for a role if need-be.

Looking back on the previous shortlists and taking Pratt into consideration, it’s clear that writer/director James Gunn is planning on injecting a good amount of humor into Guardians of the Galaxy. A rumor surfaced recently that Marvel was looking at possibly tapping Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler to do voice work in the film (one of the guardians is a talking raccoon), so I’m interested to see the tone that Gunn settles on for the finished film.

With the role of Star-Lord secure, Gunn and Marvel now look to filling out the rest of the cast, which includes the powerful Drax the Destroyer, a giant tree named Groot, the aforementioned Rocket Raccoon, and the female lead Gamora. The story is also rumored to involve the villain Thanos. Expect to hear more soon as production gears up to begin later this year. Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

This movie was very entertaining and funny, didn't take itself real seriously.

I'm not big on Marvel movies and maybe catch them mostly when they get to the TV. This one i recommend on the big screen even the little woman liked it.

You guys gotta get over the accents thing. It's Marvel's way of denoting different parts of the universe everybody's from. People have been bitching about Yondu's southern drawl nonstop.

If you're going to get hung up on accents, keep in mind: in the Marvel cinematic universe, everybody but Groot speaks English. And even Groot's words resemble English.

Well, Thanos was overpowered in the comic. (Keep in mind, this is a comic I adore.)

Not a complaint, just a reality. The writer made him so powerful that he was literally incapable of being defeated. The comic had to rely on a ridiculous deux ex machina to bring Thanos down. And while that works in a comic book, where we're along for the adventure more than we are any particular conclusion, that's not going to play well on the big screen.

In short, the infinity stones should make Cinematic Thanos incredibly powerful, perhaps more powerful than the entire Marvel roster assembled so far. But they can't make him the equivalent of the One-Above-All in the movie like they did in the comic, they'll run into the exact same problem the comic did -- "alright, we've built this incredible villain, now how do we bring him down."

By the way, for those of you who are into the Marvel mythology but don't like to read comics, Thanos became even more powerful than he did in the IG storyline in a later comic series when he acquired the Heart of the Universe. The deux ex machina in that comic, however, was more profound.

That's fine and everything. You're welcome to do that. But they wrote themselves into a corner when they chose to do that when they designed to ultimately bring him to defeat.

That doesn't detract from the character, or the story really, but that ain't gonna swing on the big screen.

Lee Pace (Ronan) was in a completely different movie from everyone else. The first 15 minutes I actually didn't think I could make it through the movie. Beyond clunky exposition, bad acting, bad production design. Over the top melodrama. Horrible.

Enter: Chris Pratt's self-referential humor.

Movie=saved.

When the movie tried in any way to take itself seriously it was just relentlessly painful. Every single time they let the actors make fun of the scene - including John C. Reilly who THANK GOD got to be funny with Glen Close - the movie just soared above expectations.

It's almost like, until you were in a scene with Chris Pratt, your character was boring, over dramatic and stiff. Then, they give you a scene with Pratt and suddenly you're hilarious. I wonder if it was intentional.

I disagree
I think he will be tricked into losing the power after he lays waste to half the universe, and it will go over just fine.
Making him any less than all powerful, and undefeatable would make following the IG story line completely pointless, as I think you miss the real point of it.
I would be totally cool with Thanos growing crops in the soul gem with, seemingly, all of eternity to ponder his missteps when all is said and done.

I also wanted to point out that I think they will go with the plan that failed in the comics that Earth's heroes tried to pull off, in some form, considering this will not be a battle vs the cosmic entities.
Thanos is still confused as to why Death does not want him, and the devil, Mephisto, convinces him that bravery would win her cold heart, and that he would have to battle them straight up to show her that.
So he cuts off all sensory input so that he would not know their next move.
Giving them a .05% chance at victory.
That will give them the chance they need to somehow win. It's gonna be beyond Epic

Everyone told me this movie was good. I was made to go see it. What a shitfest. There was still, literally a freaking talking tree and a racoon. One of the stupidest movies ive ever seen. Not quite as bad as lord of the rings and harry potter, but pretty ****ing bad
