you can argue that 1st base and LF are comparable...but 1B is generally reserved for your power hitting lefty since he can only play 1B or OF. And I can't imagine Travis Hafner ever being able to play OF (although maybe he did when he was younger)...

but regardless...left field is where you hide your shitty left handed players who can't play defense, or shitty defensive players who can't throw.

Ultimately, Hootie, bats play. That's why, defending upon the roster construction, you might see a Manny. Or, if he's particularly slow, you have a Billy Butler at 1B, or a Miggy at 3B.

At the K, I'll take LF over 3B every single day.

Here are the position adjustments for Baseball Reference WAR:

1.C: +10 runs
2.SS: +7.5 runs
3.2B: +3 runs
4.CF: +2.5 runs
5.3b: +2 runs
6.RF: -7.5 runs
7.LF: -7.5 runs
8.1B: -10 runs
9.DH: -15 runs

Catcher is a little funny because not many people can do it, but its not really the usual speedy, rangey, athletic type of skill thats needed like for every other position.

Catcher aside, this pretty much lines up with how I've always felt. There's a big drop off from 3B to the corner OF, then another one to 1B, and finally you had better be a really big bat to DH.

maybe I need to take a deep breath from these game threads and not let everyone's inferior baseball knowledge get to me so much...

I have a hard time even being able to watch these games because every ****ing day someone will chirp in and say something absurd like...

"omg why would you take a gold glove left fielder and play him at 3rd when left field is so much more important than 3rd base...and the guy replacing LF is terrible even though he graded out as our best outfielder a year prior..."
