I think you'll find the only thing I ever said about 1st base (a position I know very well)...is that it is a RESERVED position.

Just like LF (generally).

It is reserved for left handed power hitters...and if you don't have one of those, you put your shittiest right handed power hitter that can't field there.

Is it a plus to have a Gordon in LF or a Teixiera at 1B? Hell yeah.

Is it necessary at all!? No.

Even the worst defenders still make plays...Soriano still makes plays. He makes the outs he needs to make he just doesn't do anything spectacular and he ****s up way more than he should...but his bat more than makes up for any of that. Besides, Soriano has always had a premier LF arm.

Saying 3B or 1B is less important than LF is simply ignorant. Flat out dumb. It's why they move the Ryan Braun's, and Alex Gordon's, and Albert Pujols', and Chipper Jones' from 3B to LF...because they make room for better defensive 3rd baseman and realize if you can play third ****ing base you can easily play left ****ing field.

Dyson may be a shoddy CF'er because of the amount of instincts and ground you need...but I guarantee he would be, at worst, at replacement level as a defensive left fielder.

I don't know where you got this information or who told you this...

but the idea that left field is a more important defensive position than third base is one of the most ignorant statements I've heard in these game threads to date and they've been all laughers for the most part.

Great defense in LF has value, but not as much value as great defense at any other position. Especially if you have a great CF (Like Cain/Dyson), the great LF is a luxury. (still, I think Gordon's D was worth 2-3 wins last year, based on stats... but those metrics are tricky).

A great defensive LF probably adds no more value defensively than an average 3B, in the majors at least.

3B is more important defensively. But I wouldn't argue that you can hide poor defenders at both spots. In LF, if you have someone who can run at least at a slightly-below-average level and is willing to try. If you have a guy with decent hands who can't run at all and a decent arm (like Miguel Cabrera) you can hide that guy at 3B.

Defensive importance ranks (in my opinion):
1) SS (not even close, really)
2) CF
3) C
4) 2B
5) 3B
6) RF
7) LF
8) 1B (just because I think there are more guys you can hide at 1B than at LF)

Side note: How sad is it that I'd rather have Elliott Johnson/Jarrod Dyson/Miguel Tejada playing full time than Jeff Francoeur?

I think one of the themes of the Moneyball book and movie was that most of the guys that get the jobs like Ned Yost think the same way that you just argued against.

Yost is likely to think that players build a comfort level from routine and I doubt he would move Gordon to 3b, after Gordon never lived up to his first round draft pick status until settling in left field.

I made fun of "Alice" for not being able to play anything but left and leadoff (according to CP) so I made the comment they should put him at 3rd (in jest) and replace him with Dyson to eliminate Moose but he was too much of a headcase to do so (poking fun at CP who gets mad when I suggest he hit 3rd but people say he can't because we've tried it etc...)

and then you made the absurd comment about left being more important than 3rd...
