It's Alex Smith's fault that the defense was historically bad? Should we ignore that we were forced to march Cyrus Gray out there in the 4th and that AJ Jenkins was honest to god our #2 receiver? Do you really think Smith has veto power to trump Andy Reid on his moronic playcalling? When Smith throws a 3rd down and 4th down pass to Bowe that kills a drive on a drop most receivers would not make, that's on him too? How are those excuses? There is not a damn thing Smith was going to do to fix those problems. The playcalling in the second half was awful, the running game was awful, and minus Avery we had probably one of the worst receiving corps in the league let alone the playoffs. That's what Smith had to contend with. And despite that, he got 12 first downs, 143 yards, and threw a pass that should have won us the game had our receiver done his job. |

Why do you keep acting as if 12 first downs means something?
You can't milk the clock AND score? Did I miss a new rule? And the three drives before that weren't critical? I guess in your eyes they're not - because if they were, two of them being less than 1:30 in length would destroy your argument. One of those being extended doesn't leave Indy enough time. Guess what. He plays the most important position in the sport. If he can't handle the pressure of extending one ****ing drive, or maybe scoring more than 3 points without getting the ball inside the 20 yard line, then he can GTFO. Handling pressure is his ****ing job. |

The pass was a little outside, not perfect.

You seem to have an excuse for everything but the fumble.
(probably because even you can't excuse it, because even a punt there along with Indy making up the field position likely leaves Indy without time at the end) |

It was not an easy catch for Bowe to make. But it was a makeable play on an extremely difficult throw in the most critical of situations. Any good receiver in a playoff situation has to make that catch.

And just think - if we convert more than 2/7 on 3rd down, we're kneeling instead of depending on a WR to make a great catch.

And they were 2/2 of those. Never had a 4th down in the 2nd half. |

You go well out of your way to make sure we know that the "gifted" 3 points on a field goal came from defense, and yet you don't have any problem asking why Smith had such a short time of possession on that drive? You keep saying EXTEND ONE DRIVE. As if the Chiefs didn't extend a single drive in the second half. The Chiefs extended a drive 12 times. So I think you're the one who's being ultra-liberal about the terminology here, because according to you a first down doesn't count unless you get it on third down. Quote:
He was asked to run out the clock with no running game. When he was put in a situation to be aggressive he ran a terrific 5-minute drive and then on the final drive, threw a makable fourth down conversion that was dropped. He handled the pressure. You have yet to tell me a single way he is going to get Knile Davis and Cyrus Gray extra yards. Why Smith should get blamed for Reid's moronic playcalling, which every single person acknowledges was crazy bad. Smith's job is to execute the plays sent in, hand the ball off to a RB and hope the RB gets yards, and put the ball in the place he's supposed to. He did that more than enough times to win the game on the second half to support a bad team. He apparently didn't do that enough to support a team that was epically bad from the top down. |

Oh my ****ing god this shit again!!!! I knew as I clicked on the last page without reading any of this thread prior, that you guys would be arguing the same ol shit about AS and the playoffs and whether or not it was his fault or if he sucks. I use to have passion about the subject, then I was bored with it. Now, I find it hilarious!!!

Maybe our running game should have gotten a single first down for us. ONE. Maybe our defense should have forced a single third down. ONE. Instead, we are asking why a guy didn't get more than 12 first downs (which could have been 13 or 14, if Bowe makes two makeable catches). |

That should cover it. I think every possible excuse has been mentioned at this point.
I'd queue up the TrueFan .gif, but I'm on my iPad. 2014 is going to be awesome. I may have to lurk after all here and there for some laughs. |

Do you want more GIFs?
I can show the 2nd and 12 Smith converted with a good pass just a fraction of a second before Mathis got to him because he was barely even slowed down. Or the 2nd and 11 he ran for. Jamaal Charles during the season got a 1st down or TD 1 out of every 3.6 rushes. *I think they count a TD as a 1st* Even someone who sucked last year, MJD. Got 1 every 5.4. Like it was shown here many times. 0 RB runs for a 1st down in the 2nd half. And they were not setting up 2nd/3rd and short scenarios either. They were running into the pile and happy to not fumble. 9 rushes for a 2.7 avg |

Lumping in a drive on a short 28-yard field as a situation where we didn't extend a drive is an excuse. Especially when you say that drive was gifted. Lumping in a drive where the pass was thrown to Bowe and he dropped it is blaming Smith for a drive he didn't kill. Claiming Smith didn't do anything the last 26 minutes, even though he led two very good final drives in the 4th quarter.... one that milked 5 minutes of clock and led to a critical score, the second one that should have set up a game-winning field goal is an excuse for criticism. Claiming that the last pass would have never happened if Smith did his job earlier in the game is an excuse for criticism. Let's not act like one side is making excuses and the other isn't. |

Denver lead the NFL with 435 total 1st Downs
27.2 / game 13.5 / half THERE IS VERY LITTLE ARGUMENT TO HOW THE OFFENSE COST KC IN THE 2ND HALF The 2nd best team was New England and they were all the way down to 23.6 / game 12 in a half is actually better than the 2nd best team in the NFL and that's Smith and co on offense not doing enough to burn the clock? |
