**Official MU Head Coach Search Thread**

Seems like this deserves its own thread. The news will start coming fast over the next week or two, IMO. Recruiting is a 365-day event and we can't afford to be rudderless for long.

My vote - Cuonzo Martin.

Discuss.

In this case, no news is very very bad news. The longer this has gone on today with no real 'heat' to the flame, the more worried I am about it.

The good news is that I'm a Mizzou fan so I fully expect everything to crumble miserably before our eyes.

I'm fairly certain we're going to be overpaying for Smart fairly soon and we'll regret it in short order.

If he wants to win titles, he probably won't be coaching at Mizzou or Purdue.

Dear Missouri: Seriously?

Perhaps the biggest storyline to emerge from the press conference announcing the return of Mike Anderson to Arkansas as head coach came not from Anderson himself, the Arkansas press or Arkansas fans. No, at an event arranged to welcome a 17-year assistant at the University of Arkansas back to run the same program his children grew cheering, the standout moment of the day was provided by an ambitious, if unprofessional, Missouri reporter by the name of Dani Wexelman.

Now, there are those who have used certain profane words to describe this reporter, but I won’t join in on all of that, and will actually say that it isn’t fair to do so. It isn’t very adult to do so. Ms. Wexelman was doing her job as she saw fit, and as press had every right to be at a press conference and asking questions in the time allotted to the press to do so. Ms. Wexelman is not a bad person, to the best of my knowledge.

But she IS bush-league, or at a minimum, was in that moment. I don’t begrudge her the right to ask the question – the press has a job to do and are often unjustifiably maligned for attempting to do that job. But it was certainly the wrong moment, the wrong location, the wrong avenue for that question. When a man is in the middle of a wedding, you don’t ask him about why and how he broke up with his old girlfriend.

But it isn’t just Ms. Wexelman. There is a certain breed of crazy that follows a coach to his press conference at a new school in a new state to badger him about the protocol used in leaving the last one. Missouri is sick with this particular brand of crazy at the present.

Let me be very clear here – I’m talking to you, Missouri fans, radio hosts, writers and administration personnel. You have absolutely no justification for animosity towards Mike Anderson. None. What you have is a contrived and juvenile angst over the regular unfolding of affairs not only in major college coaching, but in nearly all levels of professional life.

Coach Mike Anderson calls the Hogs at the press conference announcing him as the new coach of the University of Arkansas Basketball Program.

Mike Anderson left Missouri for his dream job. Where his children were born. Where he reached the greatest of heights and made the closest of friends. For a quarter million dollars more per year than Missouri’s best offer. In an arena around 130% the size of Missouri’s (and one that won’t have seats available for the late arrivals, much less thousands of empty seats, in years where the team is competitive). In short, Mike Anderson left Missouri for a better job and a more personally relevant job.

Unless you are currently in the same job you first began work in, you have no ground to cast aspersions on Anderson for leaving Mizzou. Casting those aspersions makes you a hypocrite.

Of course, the new refrain is that the underlying issue is not one of Anderson’s departure, but instead the nature of that departure. They say Anderson lied. I say he engaged in coachspeak. “I plan on being at Mizzou for a long time” is not the same as “I will be at Mizzou for a long time”. Sure, it’s semantics, and sure, it won’t work if your wife finds a new bra in your car.

It’s coachspeak. Ever wonder how that word came to be? Why the word “coach” is right there in the title? It’s really quite simple. If you work for FedEx, the media doesn’t show up while you’re finishing up the big account to ask you if there is any truth to rumors that you’re thinking about going to work for UPS. They DO show up when guys like Mike Anderson are preparing their teams to play in the NCAA Tournament. And when guys like Coach Anderson answer the question, telling you that they are here now and are focusing on the Tournament, you melt down. You demand answers, something concrete. And that’s when the semantics show up. It’s when they HAVE to show up.

If you tell your boss at FedEx “yeah, I might be going to UPS, they’re offering me more money. You want to counter with a raise?”, you’re not going to be viewed as a loyal employee of FedEx ever again. If that UPS job falls through, you can easily find yourself without ANY job. Not to mention, that big account you’re trying to close could easily fall apart if the people you’re working with start to believe you aren’t going to be with them much longer. Thank God you don’t have to deal with the media in your everyday professional life, huh?

Mike Anderson could have told you that he would listen if Arkansas came calling – and you would have crucified him for it. You would have called him greedy, as if you don’t get the best pay you can get at your job. You would have called him disloyal, as if you don’t work for the company that allows you to best feed and clothe your children. Instead, Anderson did what ALL coaches do (all smart coaches anyway) – he worded his responses in a way where nothing concrete could be divined from them, and kept doing his job. The job you paid him to do.

The job he has done very well. Let’s not pretend like Mizzou had things going for them when Anderson was hired, in those halcyon Quin Snyder final days. Now, half a decade later, the Tigers are two years removed from a regional final, and were still highly visible, selected at-large to Dance and often ranked this season, in a “down” year.

Apparently, it wasn’t good enough for Anderson to tell his team. It wasn’t good enough for him to tell his AD. He needed to have a big public forum where the ingrate-iest of the ingrates could dogcuss him proper before allowing him to move on to another job, just like no other coach in major basketball history has ever, ever done. It was this failing that damned Mike Anderson to the infamy of being that guy who didn’t hug everyone and assure them how much they touched and impressed upon him in a very personal way before taking the biggest opportunity of his life.

This was Mike Anderson’s sin. He didn’t actually lie, he didn’t actually sneak off in the middle of the night, he didn’t actually leverage Mizzou off Arkansas to reap an ill-gained financial windfall, he didn’t actually fail to perform at Mizzou. He simply didn’t behave in a manner that the Mizzou fanbase could approve of, which in this case appears to be the manner in which no one with any ambition or self-respect behaves. He wasn’t Mizzou’s grinder monkey, and now he’s left with the realization that he could still be coaching for a fanbase that ignores the basketball team for 75% of the season, and then erupts in righteous indignation after the coach does his job until it’s done and proceeds to move on to a better position.

I’m sure he’s learned his lesson.

What a bunch of horseshit.

Funny how he failed to mention that this is the THIRD time Anderson did this, how he lied, and how he only took the Arkansas job when it was clear MU wasn't going to raise their offer anymore.

And then he takes a shot at Mizzou fans at the end? Yeah ok...I guess Arkansas fans are ok with a couple of absolute scumbags running their football and basketball programs.

Mother**** that guy and mother**** everything to do with that university.
