Don't bother. If you're looking for a place to start with Civ, find Civ 2.
Civ 3 is a much better game than Civ 2, though. The diplomacy and cultural options make it much better. Civ 4 streamlined and expanded on the concepts that they introduced in Civ 3. I'd be suprised if you could even find a version of Civ 1 that would work on a modern computer. Civ 4 is the best Civ to date, and without a doubt, Civ 5 will make Civ 4 obsolete. Sid Meier doesn't jerk with his franchise.

BTW... Civ is not a sequential thing. They just keep improving the previous versions by adding new concepts and strategies to pursue (and of course, graphics).
If you're looking for an entry point Civ V is going to be just as good as any. Just play on the easy mode until you're ready to move up. The bottom line for Civ: The game is easy to learn but difficult to master.

That's one franchise that I always wanted to, but never actually got down to playing.

I go retro quite often actually. I have Masters of Orion II on deck right now, but probably won't get to it until well after I'm done with Starcraft II and then Civ V.

Agreed - I think it will make individuals units much more useful. I often did not produce certain units, especially ranged units, because it was easier and quicker just to produce a mass amount of foot soldiers (swordsman, rifleman, infantry, etc).
