Late night bullshit: Chiefs needs, aside from QB.

I love how Pioli looked at the Chiefs performance in last year's playoff game, and he makes priority #A1 to upgrade the WR position.

Added Breaston. Drafted Baldwin. Picked Colbert off the scrap heap.

I think when the season wraps up this year, Pioli's going to look over this team and decide that it needs to have its passrush revamped to help out Hali much like he helped out Bowe.

The problem with this, of course, is that it's muuuuuch harder to rush the passer than it is to run a route and receive passes. As a result, there's really no OLB on the scene in 2012 that are working picking up through free agency. OLB will need to be a very early pick for the Chiefs.

Defensive line will need to be upgraded as well. Dorsey will be in his contract year, and Pioli has no loyalty to him because he was an Edwards pick. It's possible that Allen Bailey is that guy, but the Chiefs need to fortify the position anyway because holding onto Wallace Gilberry will be very difficult. It also isn't clear that Bailey can do much to rush the passer. Dorsey and Jackson can't either, so a DE specialized in applying pressure, maybe?

NT is more of a concern for me than it is for the Chiefs, who may be willing to resign both Gregg and Amon Gordon. But I'd like to see a stud, especially with how well Chapman played tonight for Alabama.

Depth across our secondary should be a concern. The way the league is changing, a team cannot survive without a talented and deep secondary. Resigning Carr must happen, and Berry must recover from his injury. But we need more CB and especially S help.

Offensive line is going to look pretty set, so long as we find a new right tackle: [new RT] [Asamoah] [Hudson] [Lilja] [Albert]. Depth at tackle will also be needed, and other than Darryl Harris, we have no depth along the interior.

We could use another receiving TE option, and a big back at RB, but we all know this.

Here's where I rank our needs:

1. OLB
2. RT
3. RB
4. TE
5. DE
6. S
7. OT

Battle may not be a long term solution but he is making his case for being given a shot to compliment Charles for at least a year.
I'm actually tring to hold on a little longer until I make a judgment on RB. Because I'm totally comfortable with a Battle/Charles/McCluster combo if Battle continues to play decently against Murderer's Row here in a few weeks. He deservse a chance to prove himself.

Hudson... I don't know. I watched him all preseason, and he looked really bad.

I'm not saying he's going to be bad, but he looked really bad. He was the reason Cassel got squished like a grape and cracked a rib against Green Bay. (Although ultimately that was Cassel's fault.)

You need to get over this McCluster obsession. He had 6 carries for 0 yards the other night.

The guy is not a good backup RB.

Actually, he is. Muir is not a good OC.

When you continue to send a 180lb speed back right into 300lb+ DL's you need to put the headset down and just walk away.

I know we're set at ILB, but what about depth? All the depth we have seems to get injured all the time, and I really don't care for Demorrio Williams too much.

In fact I'm pretty much drawing a complete ****ing blank on the last time the Patriots fielded a good pass rusher that wasn't named Dick Seymour.
I still love the Houston pick, and OLB passrushers often times take a while to figure this shit out. He's not the sharpest knife in the drawer and just lost his job to Andy Studebaker. I'm not making a definitive judgement on him until January 2013.

But this team needs to draft another OLB. If for nothing else, it will hedge our bets at the most important position on the defense.

Agreed. I'm happy to use him as a #3 option out of the backfield and pitch it to him in short yardage whenever he's got some space, however.

I still like the Houston pick also. I believe he WILL figure it out, and eventually become a solid pass rusher. But I expect to see it by mid 2012. January 2013 is too long to wait. Pass rushers in the NFL these days figure it out faster than they used to.

What I don't get is why Sheffield has disappeared completely from the defense.

This defense moves at break-neck speeds. Might be too much for him

This doesn't deserve its own thread so I'm posting it here.

I'm rewatching the KC/SD game from last week, and I notice that at 5:56 in the 3rd quarter, Jaws starts doodling on a replay along these lines:

"The Chiefs are looking to play three on two on the far side, so Rivers can't go there. They're doubling Antonio Gates, and daring Rivers to throw it on their best corner, Flowers."

He's right, of course, and Rivers tosses it to that WR (Floyd?) and it's dramatically overthrown.

Meanwhile, on the other side, V-Jax puts a double-move on Arenas and Lewis, who both fall over. Jackson is wide open at the 5 yard line and if Rivers had seen him, he could have trotted it in for 6.

Interesting note:

Cam Sheff: 6 QB pressures in 62 rushes.

Bustin Houston: 2 QB pressures in 48 rushes
