Bir Tawil AKA future home of ChiefsPlanet-land

Ok, so there is an 800 sq mile section of land in between Egypt and Sudan that is unclaimed by either nation. I say we put together a plan to form a permanent settlement there. Once established, we will have the ability to petition for statehood... I am thinking the Empire of ChiefsPlanetstan sounds pretty good.

(btw, this is the only land on Earth outside of Antarctica that is unclaimed)

Who is with me?

I've never heard of this place before, and it fascinates me. I have no idea why it wouldn't be claimed. Countries fight over land all the time.

Why doesn't the U.S. claim it and put a big ol' base there?

But I guess it's too late since it's now Chiefsplanetstan.

My initial reckoning is that we need the following to start it up:

1. A system of government.
2. A constitution.
3. A plan for economic development.
4. A plan for the development of housing and infrastructure for the Chiefsplanet immigrants, which would include things like water, roads, education, etc.
5. A plan for courting that big military base.

I volunteer to be on the first three committees and can chair one of them.

I nominate you to chair the constitutional committee...

As for why it is not claimed by either country... it's a very interesting situation. It stems from a dispute over a more valuable piece of land to the east(Hala’ib Triangle) ... here is a good synopsis...

Quote:
The dispute dates back to two edicts, one from 1899 and another in 1902. In 1899, the United Kingdom (which controlled the area) drew the northern border of Sudan at the 22nd Parallel, a straight line stretching eastward to the Red Sea. Under these borders, Egypt would control the Hala’ib Triangle while Bir Tawil (as these regions are called today) would fall to Sudan. But these borders had a small flaw. A group of people living in the triangle were both geographically and culturally closer to the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, but under the guise of Cairo. To fix this, in 1902, the UK decided to draw a jagged “administrative boundary” which placed the Triangle under the administration of Sudan — and, for some reason, carved out the divot known as Bir Tawil to be administered by Egypt.

Today, Egypt recognizes the 1899 border while Sudan claims the 1902 border to be true. As a result, no one wants Bir Tawil, making it the only place, outside of Antarctica, unclaimed by a nation.
Oh and it's also currently a barren wasteland... so no reason to try to claim it... that will all change once we turn it into the paradise knows as Chiefsplanetstan!

Okay, deal. I'm chairing the constitution committee. Anyone want to join me? I really think we can do some good work. I'm also volunteering to be a member of the economic development committee.

Now that I think about it, the government committee probably should be part of the constitution committee. I'm not trying to build an empire, but they kind of have to be tackled simultaneously.

I'll throw in to work on the Constitution.

Since we are going to have a big military base, I would also like to be considered as head of the Ministry of Tattoo Parlors, Pawnshops, and Payday Car Lots (MOTPPPCL)

Yup... I figure once we have a constitution, we will also have the framework for the system of govt.

What are ya thinking? I was hoping ofr an Empire but anything would be cool.. as long as we have an ombudsman... gotta have an ombudsman!

Lucky for us... we are a solid 100 miles from anyone else AND in the middle of an arid wasteland with pretty much nothing in it. OF course the fence will be needed once our neighbors find out how badass our country is... I propose a fence AND a giant ditch... maybe a minefield as well.
