Medical tourism and ACL surgery
Has anyone here ever gone to another country for a medical procedure? If so, please share your experience if you are willing.

For those who have had an ACL repaired… can you tell me what I might be in for?

Long story short… I have no medical insurance and a torn ligament in my knee. Looking around and I find that I can get my ACL repaired AND stay a week in an all inclusive resort in Costa Rica for about 35% of the cost of doing it here in the US.

Even less in the Dominican Republic.

I’m leaning towards Costa Rica because they have world class medical centers there though vs in the DR where they are working with equipment from the 80s and 90s.

Had it done on my right knee about 30 years ago. They used a piece cut from below the front of the knee, and there might be a screw up in there too. Stayed overnight, let them pull out the drainage, set me up with an apt with the doctor in a few days, when he had the stitches removed and set me up with pt.

My pt happened to be a friend of ours, who worked my ass off for 6 months. I was able to walk without a limp, run, play sports without even thinking about the knee.

My wife, whose knee was in worse condition than mine, had her acl replaced the following year after seeing how well I did.

Again, this was around 30 years ago. Undoubtedly, it has to be a lot more advanced these days. Now the cost, is a different story altogether.

I have the good fortune of being fluent in Spanish so traveling to a Latin American country isn’t a big issue. Costa Rica has facilities with staff fluent in English for those times that there is a barrier due to differences in dialect.

Then you have to think about pain management. I went off major pain killers after 3 days. I hate them.

I went the patella route for my ACL repair.
First 2-3 days you'll be sleeping a ton. I can't imagine traveling during that time.
I was on two crutches for about 4 days, single crutch for another 6 and then no crutches after that.
Rehab, rehab, rehab.. gotta do your PT
Was fully cleared for all sports activities in 6 months.

Yeah, I have a couple of uncles that go to Mexico for their dental work. The thing is, both of them are millionaires. I mean, WTF? Between dealing with the cartel and a 3rd world dentist, not worth it, practically when they can afford any dentist in the US, without a problem.

With that being said, I believe that Costa Rica actually has a quality medical system.


But Mexico? Not so much.

Mexico has some of the best out of country, low cost medical care.

Many Arizonans go there, especially for extensive dental work.

I think they use Havana Club rum as anesthesia.

Had mine done 15 years ago. My biggest suggestion is to write what knee is the bad knee on both front and back of that leg. I ended up numb in both legs for about 20 hours. I’ve heard horror stories of much worse blunders though.
