What would you do? Long but need advice

Computer got a virus so I get ahold of a local computer company and they look at it and tell me they can help etc.NOW I ask the geek up front(this same company lost $50 of my music 3 years ago when they transferred my stuff to new computer and never would own up to it) can you save my music?

I have 5500+ tunes and I'm explaining to the geek that I need to know I can trust them.He ASSURES me that it will be no problem. So I get my computer back Tuesday and what do you know 1 music folder that had all of my music has been turned into 3 and after searching I find I'm missing my entire Queen collection about 150 songs as well as other artists.

I take computer back and trying to be as polite as possible ask wtf happened.Geek tells me he transferred everything to one of their puters wiped mine and then reloaded mine and something must've happened,no shit I think.

So they have it one more day and when I pick up geek tells me he found a folder with a lot of Queen etc in it and I'm good to go.So I get home and start looking and now I have like 6 folders with music but still missing some artists and I've yet to really get into knowing just how much music I may be missing because shit is filed here and there and everywhere but when doing a full music search from some of the bands I'm seeing that I now have 2 and 3 copies of quite a few songs.

Okay I'm not a computer geek but I'd like someone to explain to me how all my music was in one folder and now it's focking everywhere,oh and that $50 worth of music the company didn't take responsibility for,I found 12 of the songs during my search but they're in an OMA format and cannot be recognized my WMP,so that music was there all along but lost to me during the transfer 3 years ago.

Thanks,if you made it this far,but I could use some advice,do I just write this off as me being the dumbass or do I make yet another trip and talk to the owner and see if anything else can be done? And I'm sorry I don't mean to rude in using the word geek but this guy that worked on my puter is the pure definition of the word and has me wondering if he's possibly too smart for his own good thus thinking he could do anything and giving me assurances he never should have.

I agree because if Itunes is set to organize your music it will create folders usually by album or artist name I can't remember which.

Joe is all of your music underneath one top level directory and then does it have folders underneath or how was it before you took it to the shop?

Thanks to you saying this I got right on the phone to see if they had saved my files,I was told they're deleted after a couple of days to which I respond,"so any music I discover lost is really lost now.?"

Tech says,"yeah I'm afraid so."

Bummer. I would never use them for service again. Let them be your client but that would be it.

Dude remember I'm a dumbass with this stuff, all I know is I had a folder called allofmymusic which was created through a site I used to use called allofmp3.com.Anytime I bought and dowloaded a song it went into this folder and that includes my purchases from Amazon as well as any cd's I ripped to my computer.

I would click on the allofmymusic icon and it would open the folder showing me all of my songs,I would then double-click on a song and it would open WMP 10 and all my songs were there, alphabetized by band and the song would play.

The dupe files and extra folders is one level of stupidity.

Some of his files were in a completely different file format, which is insane beyond comprehension. File transfer programs, Windows-based or not, can't even DO THAT.

I have to ask maybe a stupid question but is there any chance the virus I got ahold of could've created this mess? They haven't said anything like that but in case they do at last resort I'd like some other input.

I dont know of any virus that would mess with your music folders at all, much less change the format of the music in them. If the format was changed that had to be deliberate, theres no way that could happen on accident.

The different format thing makes it almost sound like they downloaded or otherwise acquired a different copy of the music he said he lost and put that on his harddrive instead of actually recovering his copy of the music.

That's an interesting point... and opens a whole other can of worms if true...

NZoner, did you tell them specifically what you were missing?

I also think that it is a bad practice to delete your customers data so quickly. Especially if said customer had already waved a red flag as to what was recovered.

Music wise I knew I was missing my Queen collection and I was missing a few songs here and there which I told them.I stopped looking shortly thereafter because I was fuming and did not have time to search every folder.

Also as I said before there's no way in hell I'm going to be able to remember every band/song I had downloaded.

I'm fairly certain that both Amazon and iTunes keep a record of what you've downloaded so that, if nothing else, you can at least audit your files and see what's missing.
