The one guy that could turn this team around

....Richard Smith

It's not that I think this guy has super skills or that he has done anything up to this point to make me think he will be a stud.

BUT..

His emergance as a guy that could be a solid outside reciever would do wonders for this team.

1. Most obviously, it would provide KC with a young, fast wideout--something Boerigter was suppose to be this year (HUGE, HUGE loss IMHO) This offense for all its past success the last two years was missing this element and still succeedung.

2. It would move Dante into the third WR role. He could focus on returns and lineup more in the slot were he is most effective. Running him across the middle or on routes that require Trent to drop the ball over the CB is moronic. He is 5'7"!!! As special a player he is, those two duties of a starting WR he just cannot do well.

3. Force the other team's best CB (ala Champ) to respect him rather than Gonzalez.

4. Help the offense convert on third downs. For all its success last year, this offense seemed to either go down the field and score OR go 3 and out. Consistent movement of the football, changing field position, and keeping the defense off the field are equally important, which brings me to my last point..

5. The defense on Sunday was giving up less than 3 ypc halfway through the third quarter and Delhomme passed for a grand total of 180 yards on some pretty lucky throws IMHO. This defense is what it is--a poor tackling team. But a poor tackling team that is tired has no chance at stopping anyone. You can't scheme your way out of that. It ran out of gas and the offense didn't respond when it needed to.

Is it unfair to put so much blame on the offense? HELL NO!! That is the unit on which the majority of the money is being spent and they way this coaching staff has decided to win games.

I'm not saying that KC can't win games without a young guy stepping up (I sure hope that isn't the only way), but if he could, I really believe it would do wonders for the whole squad.

There was a reason Richard Smith wasn't drafted.

But I read where Smith also goofed on some routes. One ended bringing more defenders into area where a screen to Gonzo was designed to go.

Most fans prolly don't even notice when things like that happen. I know I sure don't. But you know darn well the other players, and certainly the coaching staff does.

If a QB isn't confident a WR is where he's supposed to be, he won't throw him the ball.
c'mon guys, smith's just a rookie...

rookies make mistakes...

and playing time will help make him a better player...

besides, it's not like we have a boatload of good receivers ahead of him...

smith needs to improve and improve fast, but i think he can do it...

like dv says about wellbourn, we just need to be patient...

Believe it or not, I think this team has a better chanse to win playing Martyball. Given the state of the health of this team, I think we NEED to pull the reigns in on the offensive side. Carolina was expecting the run the first series. We play action pass our way down the field. Unfortunately, we left the run out of the play action part for the rest of the game. The Panthers stopped honoring the run part of the play action. When it worked, all our receivers were wide open. Without it, they had no chance.

Based on the health of the team, especially at WR, Martyball is a must. AS realized it in year one of the DV era, and went that route over the BYE week. Lets hope it doesn't take'til the BYE week this year to do the same. If so, we could very well be 0-4.

there would lots of problems playing true martyball, but keeping the ball on the ground most of the time would help the defense by keeping the other team's offense off the field...

sometimes, at least, the best defense is a good offense...
