Lynch fined 75K for helmet to helmet hit...

but the Denver fans said it was 'legal'.

DENVER (AP) -- Broncos safety John Lynch was fined $75,000 by the NFL on Tuesday for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Colts fullback Dallas Clark last weekend.

A league spokesman said Lynch, a 12-year veteran with a reputation as a hard hitter, received the harsh penalty because this was his fourth fine for unnecessary roughness since 2001. The first three all cost him $7,500.

The hit came in the first quarter Sunday.

Clark made a catch and Lynch leveled him just as he turned around. A flag went flying, the ball came loose, it was scooped up by Colts receiver Reggie Wayne, but he then fumbled and Broncos cornerback Kelly Herndon picked it up and ran for a touchdown. Because the hit didn't result in a tackle, officials picked up the flag.

On review, however, officials ruled the pass was incomplete and reinstated the personal foul.

The Broncos were off Tuesday and Lynch was unavailable for comment. After the game, though, the safety said he had no regrets about the hit and insisted it would send a message for the rematch between the teams this Sunday in the first round of the playoffs.

``They're great players,'' Lynch said. ``You've got to find something to slow them down. The only way I think people have found is to be physical with them.''

The hit knocked Clark out of the game with a concussion. He looked dazed on the sideline and had some blood inside his mouth. Approached by a teammate, he could be seen mouthing the words ``I fumbled?'' when told of the result of the play.

Lynch talked at length about the hit Sunday, and even joked a little, relaying a conversation he had with officials: ``I told the ref, `You're killing me. I've got three kids to send to school,''' Lynch said.

The NFL spokesman said the fine had nothing to do with Lynch's comments, only his actions on the field.

This was the second $75,000 fine the NFL has levied in two weeks. The league fined Donovin Darius of the Jaguars for a clothesline hit that temporarily paralyzed Packers receiver Robert Ferguson.

Lynch was the first player to be fined this season -- a $7,500 penalty for a hard hit just below Chiefs receiver Dante Hall's chin in the season opener. Upon receiving that fine, Lynch criticized the league.

``If you make the highlights these days, you're going to get fined,'' he said. ``That's pretty much what it comes down to. It's kind of hypocritical. They put it on their `Greatest Hits,' but they'll fine you for it, too.''

This week, knowing a fine was probably coming, Lynch didn't seem as concerned.

``I think it sparked the team,'' he said. ``Regardless of what happens, people will remember it.''

TJ, how can you argue it's OK for players to hit like that? Is it just innocent homerism or are you just stupid? I'd prefer to think it's the former since I haven't really seen any blatant stupidity out of you yet.

Chief fans love to bash both Champ and Lynch.

And then they have to come home to Woods and Warfield.

Its Poetic Justice.

Champ + Lynch = 11 Pro Bowls

Warfield + Woods = 1 Pro Bowl

John Lynch is not Chuck Cecil.

Anyone not residing in KC or INDY this week would openly testify to that.

If Dallas Clark retires this week to take up Table Tennis than i'll be willing to believe that he thinks Lynch was purposefully trying to paralyze him.

If Dallas Clark suits up for the game on Sunday, I'll just assume that he realizes football is a physical game.

A Collision sport.

Its been WAY too long since you guys have had a hard hitting Defense.

I think you've forgotten what thats all about.

I'm not saying Lynch tried to hurt him. Lynch tackled him with a cheap hit, not considering the safety of his fellow player. It was careless and wrong and potentially deadly. Hitting like that isn't and shouldn't be allowed. If this was the 1st time, it'd be cool with that, because shit happens, but Lynch is just a cheap fucker and does such things on a consistant basis.

BS. It's a sucker punch hit by a descending player, for a team that year in and year out has to employ illegal actions to compete.

Obviously Colts fans were even more upset about it.

As the Lynch threads grew, a bunch of posters came in and reminded everyone that Colts fans were salivating at the thought of signing Lynch this offseason just for that kind of play.

And pointed out that it would be nice if Doss or Sanders would put some KO shots out there like that more often.

Colts fans as a majority are still calling for Lynch's head, but only at about a 65% to 35% ratio.

I'm glad it was Clark though .... I think it would have been much worse (for the Colts) if it were Stokely, Harrison, or Wayne.

Clark is probably a bigger guy than Lynch.

Also, im glad it wasn't Kenoy who blew up Clark too .... When he got Chambers + the suspension he turned gun shy for about a full year.

I think Lynch takes the same shot this weekend without a 2nd thought.

PS: It would have been a 7,500 dollar fine if not for Lynch already having 3 of those over the last 2 years.

It seems as if some people are thinking that the league decided that the hit itself was worth 75k.

Nice guys finish last. - Edit - Or 2nd from Last.

If Atwater and Dennis Smith played within the current rules geared towards the Offense and pass game ... they probably would have ended up working for free.
