How can "vanilla" be the excuse?

Aren't the other teams running "vanilla" schemes in the preseason, also? I'm no expert but I'd say the problem is our lineman. Someone explain why their vanilla is so much better than ours.

Besides the one reverse, what did the Giants do offensively that would not be considered "vanilla"?

I thought the Giants were pretty basic really, Tom Coughlins an offensive coach and I didn't see any non basic stuff from them.

So will we come out of our "vanilla" defense and have the ability to stop a reverse or bootleg in game one?

That is my point, even in a vanilla defense the players should be capable of defending a reverse and basic misdirection plays and well they aren't.

It doesn't matter if the Chiefs run them or not, the point is the defense can't defend basic misdirection plays. Hell basic offensive players for that matter a reverse is a basic play now.

Everyone assumes the offense will put up points that isn't the question, the defense looked brutal though, vanilla or not. Blitzing and stunts will only cover up so much but if you can't pick up basic assignments like shooting a gap in a vanilla defense or holding point wide on a reverse to force them to cut back in, well your shit out of luck.

Schemes and packages only cover up so much you have to make plays......

Technically a counter play is a "trick" and "misdirection" so I agree with you

I agree, for the past 4-5 years as a spectator, when I see any type of misdirection of even play action I know a big play or easy 1st down is coming. We as fans of the Chiefs practically rub one out when they stop one, we are surprised and excited rather than expecting a stop. I just don't see any potential of that changing in these first two scrimmages.

I saw us blitz more than a handful of times, including that first drive when they marched down the field on us. We didn't stop anything.

Having said that, the world isn't about to end. We're still learning, coordinating the secondary with the front 7, etc. We'll be better. However, the DLine is going to kill us. Running the "Tampa 2" is fine if you have Simeon Rice to force quicker throws. Or Dwight Freeney. We have neither a pass rushing phenom or run stuffing D tackles, and that will be our downfall.

From what the defensive looks appeared to be, it was pretty vanilla in the back.

We did bring some blitzes and mix it up a little in the front, but the main problem was still no push up the middle.

The preseason is only halfway over.

Vanilla, not vanilla, who cares? That the Giants ran a reverse or two doesn't take away from the fact that we got our asses kicked in very basic football situations. Their DE's ran unimpeded into our backfield. Our D-line got blown off the ball. We didn't block, we didn't tackle.

Preseason or not, that we haven't shown the ability to perform even the basic football skills at a satisfactory level should disturb even the most optimistic Chief fan.

Exactly...with 10 minutes left in the game...the KC offenses collectively had not gain 100 yards. That's tough
