What advice would you give someone who is applying for supervisory position?

When he has no supervisory experience. I need some buzzwords to throw around. I'd really like to get this job and get some sup/management experience under my belt. It's within the agency i'm in now, so I know I will get an interview, I just need some "helpful hints".

TIA!

Don't spell "matrix"..."matrices" on your cover letter.
That's the plural of matrix, though. Was the use of the plural form intentional?

If you become a manager don't figure out what your salary breaks down to per hour worked, it will only discourage you.

It's an hourly job.

This seems like very good advice. Many interviewers are going with behavioral type scenarios, and it would be wise for me to think up a few scenarios like the above and use them for my interview.

If you haven't shown any leadership abilities in the job you have, at least enough for the guy that is your immediate manager to notice you might be in the middle of a gigantic pipe dream.

Self improvement courses in the area of management might be a pre-requisite for going for a job in management.

If you haven't already taken courses as such y ou might be barking up the wrong tree. Don't mean to be disrespectful here, but if they are looking for a manager they are probably not looking for a wanna be with no experience.

Go get a copy of "The One Minute Manager" and read it. It is a very quick read, easily finished in one afternoon even if you are a very slow reader. Soak in the philosophy and put it in your own terms and present it as your own personal management style.

Next, steal a management handbook from your HR department. Use that document to memorize the buzzwords and key phrases that are native to your company. Spend a lot of time with this.

Next, look up the history of your company. Find out who what its founding concepts were and who the sacred cows are. Memorize as much of this history as you possibly can.

During the interview, construct all of your responses from one of those three activities. If you have what it takes to be a good manager then that is all you will need to get promoted.

I can honestly say that this recommendation is the biggest load of BS I've ever heard.

What this person is recommending is a flash show, if you have no substance behind your beliefs and concepts you will surely fail.

Do something that will develop the management skills needed to manage. If you get a position and have nothing of substance to give to the company not only will you lose the position you want so badly but you might also lose what you currently have.

Wrong. It's a government position. If I fail, I will surely be promoted.

be sure to mention the absorbent amount of time that you spend on message boards. It will show that you know how to waste resources and government jobs are all about that.
