Wichita: Home of Americas finest

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287953,00.html

WICHITA, Kan. — As stabbing victim LaShanda Calloway lay dying on the floor of a convenience store, five shoppers, including one who stopped to take a picture of her with a cell phone, stepped over the woman, police said.

The June 23 situation, captured on the store's surveillance video, got scant news coverage until a columnist for The Wichita Eagle disclosed the existence of the video and its contents Tuesday.

Police have refused to release the video, saying it is part of their investigation.

"It was tragic to watch," police spokesman Gordon Bassham said Tuesday. "The fact that people were more interested in taking a picture with a cell phone and shopping for snacks rather than helping this innocent young woman is, frankly, revolting."

The woman was stabbed during an altercation that was not part of a robbery, Bassham said. It took about two minutes for someone to call 911, he said.

Calloway, 27, died later at a hospital.

Two suspects have been arrested. A 19-year-old woman was charged with first-degree murder. Another suspect who turned himself in had not been charged as of Tuesday, the Sedgwick County prosecutor's office said.

The district attorney's office will have to decide whether any of the shoppers could be charged, Bassham said.

It was uncertain what law, if any, would be applicable. A state statute for failure to render aid refers only to victims of a car accident.

Eagle columnist Mark McCormick told The Associated Press he learned about the video when he called Wichita Police Chief Norman Williams to inquire about a phone call he had received from a reader complaining about a Police Department policy that requires emergency medical personnel to wait until police secure a crime scene before rendering aid. McCormick said Williams then unloaded on him about the shoppers in the stabbing case.

"This is just appalling," Williams told the newspaper. "I could continue shopping and not render aid and then take time out to take a picture? That's crazy. What happened to our respect for life?"

I'm thinking Kevin may be right. I worked in C-stores for years and saw a lot of things like this (no, not someone who actually was stabbed). People may not have realized that this woman was injured.

Of course, if there was a lot of blood....... I take it all back.

Seriously, I'd like to know what part of town it happened in. I live in Old Town (core of the city) and I see some pretty dodgy types at the QT from time to time when I'm in there picking up my Doritos. Then again isn't that what you would expect to see in a convenience store almost anywhere?

Saul. I never met more druggies, dumb shits and black out drunks looking for a fight types in my life than when I used to go visit my buds in Manhattan back in the day. Ari, you and the KU/KC/Chicago/St. Louis element that make up the majority base of your alma mater are kidding yourselves if you think those cities don't have their own problems.

I always find it funny that KC guys like to tell BTK jokes when KC has had it's fair share of killers (like this guy known as the Kansas City Vampire) and of course Illinois was home to good old John Wayne Gacy who as I've read spent some time in Iowa as well. It is sad that someone got stabbed and no one helped but to indict all the people of a city for a few callous a-holes is stupid. Hell, they were probably Okies passing through town and had to stop for some WD-40 and a slurpee before heading over to Skips for some sheep "dating".

That's kind of a cheap shot, don't you think? We do have people trains. In fact, they recently started putting them in front of the cattle cars.

It's not that. I've lived in Atlanta, Memphis and L.A. and have been to every major US city in the US and all I am saying is for people from Manhattan, small town KS, KC, anywhere in Mizzery or from Ioway to take shots at Wichita is a delusional on their part and makes me laugh.

I was eating lunch downtown, and a waiter passed out on the other side of the restaraunt. With Westport being close by and the metro-sexual style being popular, just about every waiter in KC looks gay. He was out for a little while and the manager asked for somebody that knew CPR. I know CPR, but I am not going to put my lips on some guy that looks gay that passed out for some unknown reason. I kind of felt bad for it later, but decided that if help was not on the way, (somebody already called 911), or if he would of passed out for a known reason, that I would have helped.

This doesn't sound like some random stabbing of an innocent bystander. Some people deserve a good whipping, and while this case is a little extreme, I think a lot of people have been in cases where a loud mouthed punk gets his tail whipped, and you laugh at him as his is laying on the floor in pain.
