CHIEFS RELEASE STOYANOVICH
Chiefs Ink Peterson, Look To Sign Ricks
by Marty McDonald
Posted on 10/11/2000

America's Heartland will have a new kicker to cheer for on Sunday. NFLScoop has exlusively learned that the Kansas City Chiefs have signed free agent kicker Todd Peterson and waived Pete Stoyanovich in a late Tuesday roster move. The team will also sign WR Mikael Ricks as their 5th wide receiver and that move could happen as early as Wednesday morning.

Peterson was cut in Seattle after an abdominal injury slowed him during training camp. Peterson's salary wasn't in favor either as the 'Hawks opted for rookie Kris Heppner who they later waived.

While Peterson will not kick-off, he would bring consistency to the position, something the Chiefs have lacked this season. Incumbent kicker Pete Stoyanovich is 2-4 on field goal attempts. One of Stoyanovich's misses cost them a week two victory over the Tennessee Titans.

Ricks, released last week by San Diego, brings incredible size and undeveloped talent to the position.

How do we know he's not going to continue to miss anything outside the 20?

There's no certainty in any of this, but Bob Dole attributes 2 of the last 3 regular season losses to Pete's lack of leg.

Goodbye, Pete. Thanks for your faithful service.

Bob Dole - I read the same article in NFLTalk, and all I can say, if it true, that the deal is in place, waiting for the physical results, then, it is one crappy way for the Chiefs, to release a player. Any player, but this one has given a lot of years to the organization. Stoyo no doubt knew the Chiefs were looking, but to read it in NFL Talk, is really sad. Maybe, I doubt it, the told him, he MIGHT be released. As far as Ricks, the remainder of the season will be his tryout. I look for Lockett to go after the current year.

It may be crappy, but it's the NFL. Pete knows as well as Bob Dole knows that he's been less than reliable at his only function. Bob Dole is certain that conversations took place.

Pete will have another job before Sunday.

I just read the news in kc.com (thanks bk). Outstanding!
The interesting thing to note, Peterson, according to the story and stats provided, has been more accurate outdoors than indoors. This is obviously good news for Chiefs

As promised, I wanted to say kudos to Marty for breaking this story. I was skeptical but he came through with the scoop. I guess I need to add nflscoop.com to my favorites now. <G>

I, for one, am glad Stoyo is finally out of here. We should have stuck with Nittmo after he won out against Roman Anderson in 96. I'm just glad that we're finally rid of these Jimmy Johnson-reject kickers.

I hate kickers. As good as some of ours have been they all seem to CHOKE when it really counts. Nick in Miami, Stenarude SP? Same thing. Stoyo made one big kick in 97 but has been weak ever since.

Assuming that Peterson is healthy, I think that this is a good move by the Chiefs. Pete was starting to become a little too inconsistent. Whether or not it is just one of those things for Pete remains to be seen.

I think that Todd Peterson will be better for the team in the long run. At least this organization is making the moves that need to be made in the season. My hats off to Carl Peterson for having the cajones to make the move.

Regarding the Ricks deal, I think that it would not be a bad move. If they do make the deal then you can say goodbye to Dave Szott. He will be placed on IR and will probably retire.

Yeah Ricks has not shined in San Diego, but who has? Can you imagine teams having to match up with Tony Gonzalez, Derrick Alexander, Sylvester Morris, and Michael Ricks?

The size in those four players would be extremely hard to handle. Ricks is very athletic. Who knows- a change of scenery, differnet coaching staff, the prospect of being labeled as lazy, may all play to our advantage. I say if we can get him to play up to his potential, this could be a great pick up. Besides, we do need another WR anyway, what could it possibly hurt to get him in here and try him out for the rest of the season.

Would be good to have another option other than Larry Parker, he has not impressed me that much. May put some much needed pressure on him to get better. Lockett, on the other hand, I think is a keeper.
