NFL awards Lions one compensatory draft pick

The NFL released its list of teams awarded with compensatory picks in the 2009 NFL draft, and the Detroit Lions will get the second to last pick in the seventh round, No. 255 overall.

The Kansas City Chiefs got the final pick of the draft at No. 256.
Teams who the NFL determines have a net loss of players in the previous season – in terms of quantity and quality – are eligible to receive extra picks in the draft.
However, the Lions were not awarded any compensatory picks based on the compensatory pick formula. Detroit and Kansas City were each given a compensatory pick based on the 2009 draft selection order.
By rule, two additional picks are awarded at the end of the seventh round to bring the total number of compensatory selections to 32, equaling the number of NFL clubs.

James Smith has been the long snapper and played on coverage units for the Gators over the last few years. He wont be drafted, though.

Benirschke is the only Mr. Irrelevant to play in the Pro Bowl, selected following the 1983 season. That year, he was 43-of-45 on extra point attempts and 15-of-24 on field goals. Oddly enough, he was better in 1984, nailing all 41 PATs and 17-of-26 field goals, yet wasn't chosen for the Pro Bowl. By the time his career ended in 1986, he had set 16 Charger team records and was inducted into the Chargers' Hall of Fame in 1997.

Benirschke may be more famous for his short stint as host of Wheel of Fortune and his bout with Crohns Disease that nearly ended his career, but his distinction as a "successful" Mr. Irrelevant no doubt gives hope to the last guy taken in the draft each year.

So, as you're keeping track of the picks, keep an eye on the final selection. Mr. Irrelevant just might end up becoming a star.

We may not have drafted him but I'm sure we had Mr. Irrelavant a couple of years ago and he went under the name Ty Law.

Except that Benirschke WASN'T Mr. Irrelevant. The author of that article got his wires crossed. 1977 Mr. Irrelevant was Jim Kelleher, RB, Colorado, pick #335 (Benirschke was #334).

There is no truth to the tale that the NFL draft was reduced to 12 rounds in order to give Mr. Irrelevant a better chance of making an NFL roster. It didn't help Jim Kelleher, a fullback from Colorado, who got to play an exhibition game in the L.A. Coliseum before his newly-made Orange County friends, but was cut the following week by the Minnesota Vikings. Kelleher's presence at many Irrelevant Weeks throughout the years has made him a leader among IW alumni. He currently lives in Boulder, Colo., and owns Advertising Specialty Co.

Jim Kelleher - ignored by reporters since at least 2004. Now THAT'S Irrelevance.
