Frank White was never a "great" offensive player.

I'd have to look it up, but I'd imagine his career batting average is somehwere around .255, and his other numbers were pretty mundane.

However, Frank White was clutch.

There wasn't anyone else I wanted at bat, other than George Brett, when you needed a hit.

And, as far as I'm concerned, he was the greatest defensive 2nd baseman ever.

Very true on all accounts. I do recall my old man telling me that Frank wasn't really a great offensive player, just serviceable. But he does recall several games that Frank was clutch. This was well before my time, so any information from the old fellers who seen them play is always appreciated by yours truly.

I do recall my old man saying that Frank batted clean-up during the '85 WS against the Redbirds, and Frank led the team with six RBI and slugged a key home run in game three.

But you are 100% correct on the greatest defensive 2nd baseman. He won eight AL Gold Glove awards during his eighteen seasons in the majors.
