Reaper's Top 10, Nay, Top 25 Albums of 2009.

For years I've posted my 10 favorite albums of the year on this very subforum. 2009 was such a strong year in music that I thought I'd expand my list by 15 entries. Plus, I'll be adding YouTube embeds to a good song (not necessarily representative) from each album. So bear with me as I add each entry. Character limits and all.

I liked the Jay-Z album. Before that, I really didn't understand any of his work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on B3 where, Jay-z's presence became more apparent.

BTW, the Mastodon album is awesum

There's a TON of shit I don't even know of; the same can be said for everyone. There's just so much music out there. That's why I don't try and make objective 'Best of __' lists anymore and just list my personal favorites. Hell, one of old college friends just put up his favorite 20 albums of 2009 and I hadn't listened to a single one of them (and had only heard about the existence of like six). My favorite thing about year-end lists is the chance to check out music that I either didn't know about or had overlooked.

I'll scope out that album right quick. EDIT: 3 tracks in; as far as blatant Tool worship goes this is pretty good.

One quibble, The Mars Volta should always be #1 if the list involves rock and roll.

Actually, this is quite a good list and you have much more patience than I in putting one together. I will be checking out some of this stuff. I would like to start something like this but would say eff it about a fourth of the way into it.

On the hip hop side though, I'm going to disagree with you on the Mos Def (it shouldn't be on any top 25 list). Considering his capabilities, The Ecstatic is a giant turd. It was vastly overrated and only received the attention it did due to Mos's prior works. The lyrics and flows are lazy compared to his previous work. Mos will not get another dollar from me ever due to his last 3 releases. Yea, I said 3. The New Danger was garbage too. As far as Brother Ali, I can't stand the Minnesota backpacker movement. It's emo-hop and grates against my nerves like nothing else.

As far as hip hop goes, Blackout 2 should have replaced mos. I haven't had a chance to pick up Royce da 5'9"'s newest one but I can guarantee you it should be up there.

I could give a shit about the lyrics sometimes with respect to what you call emo-hop. Ali, Doomtree, Atmosphere -- they all meet my musical qualifications for good (sometimes great) hip hop. You standpoint of Brother Ali grating your nerves is so alien to me that I cannot even fathom where you're coming from.

We're going to have to agree to disagree. They have skills but they annoy the shit out of me. Atmosphere (as do most of the minnesota backpackers) comes off as a whiny little girls to me.

BTW, I forgot about Sadat X's Brand New Being. That's definitely better than Mos's subpar effort.

I get that charge of whiney on Slug from Atmosphere but I don't see how it applies to other Minneapolis rappers like Brother Ali or P.O.S. or Sims or Dessa or Mike Mictlan, etc.

Anyway, Most Disappointing Albums of 2009:
5.) Jay-Z - The Blueprint 3
4.) Arctic Monkeys - Humbug
3.) Cage - Science of Annihilation
2.) Felt - Felt 3: A Tribute to Rosie Perez
1.) Vedera - Stages
You didn't like the Arctic Monkeys album? It was a departure for them (obvious Queens of the Stone Age influence by producer Josh Homme), but I thought it was terrific. Pair that album with The Last Shadow Puppet's release last year (featuring Alex Turner, frontman of the Arctic Monkeys) and I feel you have 2 great albums that really show the maturation of a band that started really young.

It was all slow and boring and God, I hated it. I ****ing treasure Arctic Monkey's debut. Josh Homme seems to piss me off to no end; I don't think I've cared for anything he's been associated with since QotSA's 2nd album.

I'm down with your list! Although, I HATE growl metal.

I have definately been meaning to check out Mastodon, but with Riverside, DT, and Porc Tree all having new albums this year...those have taken presidence.

My list would actually have Anno Domini at #1 and PT at #2. I think that Riverside album just has so much to offer that I have never heard before. Amazing riffs, vocals (if you can get past his accent), and the solos are all great Gilmourish purity.

My biggest dissapointments...

311- Uplifter (although I wasnt expecting much, I never do these days)

Sylvan- Forces of Gravity (really thought this was going to be great. The lyrics seemed half assed and Gluhmanns vocals are just wWAY overdone. Too much Labrie style squeaking if you know what i mean.)

Just call them what they are -- harsh vocals. Your phrase "growl metal" demeans any band that uses them.
