Tipping valet drivers

Say I was staying in a hotel that had a valet service, and I decided to use it. Most hotels like this charge you to even self-park, but they usually charge more for valet. It's customary to tip the valet driver when he brings you your car, right? How much do you tip him? I mean, you're already paying extra for the service. I don't want to be cheap though.

Depends. Usually $4-5 total.

Sometimes I'll just give the guy that returns the car $5, sometimes I'll give $2-3 to both the drop-off and return attendants.

Well it is what it is. It's not going away. Tipping is just another way to allocate cost to someone else. I understand if there was no longer tipping, and restaurants, valet, etc paid up to par w/ what their employees would usually make in accounts to tips as well that the price of food and whatever would go up. I would be fine w/ that, but tipping isn't going away because it's a social custom and people will just always do it, even if they paid the employees to make up for it. I just like to bitch about it

Actually I do

I usually plan a big trip at least once a year. Everything I find on the ground goes into a jar that I save up and I cash it in before I leave. My last big trip was back in April. I had $35 bucks.

Alot of those systems would fold...most restaurants run by the skin of their teeth as it is. But there are a lot worse things in the world then trying to throw a little extra money at folks who are generally young and trying to make their way in then world.

75% of all restaurants, bars, malls, stores, etc. in the Los Angeles area have valet parking available. Out of that 75%, I'd say at least 35% are valet only.

So my general rule of thumb is this:

$1-$7: $1 tip

$8-$15: $2 tip

$16 and up (like at a hotel): I don't pay until the day of checkout and it's usually $5 dollars.

Valet is a great convenience and I generally use so I don't have to **** around with trying to find parking, driving around, blah, blah, blah. It's work the extra dollar or two. But it also means that I have to carry cash and I HATE carrying cash.

I almost never valet. I don't trust young punks to drive my iron and I'm perfectly capable of walking a few extra feet. I'll valet for formal events but that's mostly being chivalrous to my wife.

I like to tip valets. They aren't as easy as tipping cows, though; valets tend to run when you try to tip them.
