Was Calvin Johnson's contract a smart move?

This is late, but all the contract talk with Bowe got me thinking.

I know the idiom is that you lock up the franchise players, etc etc. And that you can't let a guy with Hall of Fame potential walk.

That said: seven years, $132 million with $60 million guaranteed.

That's more than virtually every QB in the league gets.

It's one receiver -- the Saints put two corners on him at the goal line and compressed his space so badly, he just stood there instead of running an actual route.

I love Megatron -- clearly the most physically talented receiver ever.

But I think there comes a point where your team can get frozen into top-end contracts and force to scrape from the bargain bin everywhere else as a result.

Meanwhile, the entire Chiefs WR corps is less than that, even including the ostensible new contract Bowe will get.

Do you like this contract? Smart move by the Lions?

Calvins deal was 8-150...if you franchise him every year for 8 straight, at a 20% bump each year, it comes out to 8-156.

86 million of that would come in the last 3 years.
Good luck with getting him not to hold out/demand a trade after 1 or 2 years of that.

I think the franchise tag takes into account how much you already make as well. I'm pretty sure that I heard that the tag for Mario Williams would be much higher than it would be for another DE because of how much he got from his rookie deal.

It would have cost the Texans $22M to franchise Mario while it only took the Lions $10.6M to tag Cliff Avril.

Shit I would do that deal everytime if it got us consistency of playing in the AFC championship and constant division crowns.. Hell Calvin is still young, once they get a running game consistently it is on.. Defend Calvin or stop the run..

I wasn't really suggesting that as a course of action as much as I was just comparing the amounts to show how out of whack the deal was.

It's basically an Al Davis deal.

21 million next year...then 25 in 2013...damn.

What do you do when Stafford wants a new deal and demands a Calvin style premium?

What then? 8 years, 200 million?

Then Suhs deal is up shortly after.

Another 150 million?

That team better draft perfectly.

I would for sure give Stafford that money, outside of the qb it's tough to justify.

You can get the two best passrushers in the league. You can get an entire offensive line.
What was the Chiefs Red Zone Efficiency compared to the Lions? With Megatron it was almost always an automatic TD in the red zone. You can't put a price on game changers.

Jerry Jones and Daniel Snyder respectfully disagree.
