If you've never been to OKC, might want to reserve a few hours to look around. The Oklahoma City Bombing National Memorial is beautiful tribute to the people who died there. The memorial is a just a few minutes from the Bricktown entertainment district, and with the NBA finals going on, would be buzzing with people (I would think). You'll drive through a whisper of scenery as you near Ardmore, Oklahoma while you drive through the Arbuckle range. Winstar World Casino, just north of the Red River, is one of the largest casinos in the nation. There is a lovely German town just west of I35 on US 82 called Muenster, Texas. Great German market and a few restaurants.

There are also quite a few historical markers for the Marais des Cygnes Massacre and related north of Fort Scott.

If you're hungry at Emporia get off and go to Bobby Ds Merchant Street BBQ. It is excellent.
The only other thing is the William Allen White house. If you care about that. (I don't but I took the tour anyway). There is some neat stuff around Emporia but it really isn't worth stopping for. |

Arbuckle Wilderness used to be cool, its off 35 in Oklahoma. But I am seeing reports of it being over priced and ran down.
Reading more about Arbuckle Wilderness, I heard not only is it ran down but they neglect the animals. Not a good place at all anymore. Last edited by Predarat; 06-11-2012 at 08:01 AM.. |

Muskogee. (Sp?) I used to make the drive often, and 69 was the way I drove. But in muskogee, first wife had an accident and two speeding tickets there. Sister in law got arrested and I got two tickets too. All different times of course, but even now I never stop or speed in muskogee. Just get through it as quick as possible without making any waves. |

I think we've been to the German area. I remember buying Kolaches. The Nimitz museum will be worth the drive. We plan to go.

The last time we went to Dallas, we stopped in OKC to see the bombing memorial, stopped in Dallas to see where Kennedy was shot, went to San Antonio to see the Alamo, went to Houston for fun, visited the San Jacinto battlefield and the battleship Texas, then drove back to Dallas for the rest of the week. We made up our own history tour of the state of Tx. It was a really fun trip. I'd like to hit more historical locations again. But, we don't have the time or money to deviate from I-35 or Dallas as much as we did the last time. But, I would take a day to drive an hour or two out of the way to see something really worthwhile. So, World War II in the Pacific museum (Nimitz museum) is probably where we'll go. If the German area is south of Dallas, we might go there for some food as long as it isn't too far past Dallas. I would take 69 or another route, but we plan to visit friends in OKC.

I wonder if there are any diners, drive-ins or dives along the way? I'll have to look that up.
