Why is poker still on ESPN?

I thought this fad died already. For a while, poker was on multiple channels all the effing time. That was a couple years ago. Then I stopped seeing it. Now I turn it to ESPN today, and the WSOP is on. So do they only show the WSOP now days? I like poker, but I don't get how anyone could want to watch people play. Furthermore, it shouldn't be on ESPN.

Well, my personal poker experience is just playing with friends (of the non-yuppie douchebag variety) for fairly low stakes with limits every once in a while. Dealer picked the game, and the variations was one of the best parts. And there was none of this "all in" crap. If you didn't have enough money to continue playing, you quit or got more money. That worked just fine for me.

Yeah, you're an old school gambler. And I don't mean that in a bad way. One of my good buddies dad and his friend had a game similar.

I just think the World Series catered more to the young crowd; which is why it is still on tv. To make these young punks think they can pony up $10k and become an instant bazillionaire when the odds are clearly not in their favor. Pun intended.

I hear ya.

Lumpy brought up a great point. Poker is going to be a dying breed because they've outlawed majority of internet poker.

I enjoy watching it on tv. More so for the dialogue then the actual poker itself.

Some of those guys can make some incredible reads.

When I was in Vegas with my friend, we played at a 1-3 limit table at Excalibur. It was money central. Lots of noob drunk tourists filter in and out and just play for fun. We sat there for a few hours and walked away with about 300 each. It wasnt a huge winnings or anything but it was fun. Lots of nice people, free drinks, and low risk. Neither of us are great poker players but it was really easy to make some money at that table. Try it out next time you get a chance.

That's how you can tell the difference between someone that truly enjoys the game and someone who is just playing because it's cool or they see themselves becoming rich and famous.

I haven't played online all that much ever since they put the kibosh on real cash gaming. It's not that I don't think it's "cool" anymore, but it takes away from the experience when you're not playing w/ your hard-earned money. People are also way more cautious w/ the way they play when their money is on the line. But w/ free games, the majority of the players, (mostly novice players), will play every damn hand and hope for the best.

I prefer a real challenge by playing against experienced players. That's why I've always preferred RL games over online. Staring a person in the eyes, watching their body language, shit-talking, etc. That is what makes poker interesting and fun.

It was watchable in the first few years it was on because ESPN propped up the stars it had. You grew to know the people playing the game, which made it interesting when you watched how they would play stuff against other people.

The problem is the fad grew exponentially to the point that there were so many n00bs in the final tables that you just kind of said, "Meh. Who cares about this shit anymore if some random dweeb is going to win it every year?"

what? I love watching pro poker players play. It makes me see into their mind a little bit, I love playing poker and feel that I'm quite good at it. I like seeing what they do. I'm not saying that's how I learn to play poker, no, but I find it entertaining, interesting and informative.

It's funny to watch them wearing the sunglasses. They actually take themselves seriously... basically just attention whores.

ya but you don't usually see them at another final table. The real pro's always seem to make it pretty far in tourney's consistently. Like Phil Helmuth, he always seems to make the final table.

if you are playing against good people that are good at reading others, sunglasses can give you a little bit of an edge. I never wear them because the people I play against are scrubs usually, lol. But if I were in a serious poker tournament, you bet I would wear them.
