Is there ANY chance that Quinn can become another Rich Gannon-like QB for KC?

He's a 1st round pick. He has to have talent. Maybe he's matured and learned how to be a starting QB while holding the clipboard? He has better mobility than Cassel. He has a much better arm than Cassel. I'll bet he has better accuracy than Cassel. He needs to have better decision making and leadership than Cassel, which won't take much. That's a pretty low bar. Can Quinn shock the world and become a worthy starter? We can wish, can't we? I think the odds are 1 in 765.... maybe 764.

NFL Network analyst Mike Lombardi, a former personnel executive with the Browns and a handful of other teams, is not surprised Brady Quinn has struggled to duplicate the success he had at Notre Dame.

On the other hand NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock says it is still too early to pass judgment, even though 2010 will be Quinn’s fourth season with the Browns. The Browns drafted Quinn 22nd overall in 2007.

“I had him going late in the first round,” Mayock said Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine. “I think at this point it’s an incomplete report card on him. I haven’t seen him play for a full year. It’s been bits here and there. I think the jury’s out, so I haven’t shut the door on him.”

Quinn set 36 school records at Notre Dame. He completed 64.9 percent of his passes as a junior and 61.9 percent as a senior. In those two years combined he threw 69 touchdown passes and only 14 interceptions. Lombardi says those Notre Dame numbers do not translate into NFL success.

“Brady Quinn’s problem is accuracy,” Lombardi said privately Sunday after speaking to a group of reports at the NFL Combine. “Forget the percentage of completions in college. He threw a lot of bubble screens and that stuff. They all count for completion percentage, but you have to break the tape down and look at passes over 10 yards and over 15 yards. You’re going to throw (screens) in the pros, but you can’t live off those.

“You have to evaluate every quarterback in levels. Derek Anderson struggles on the second level, but he’s a good deep ball thrower.”

Quinn has played 14 games with the Browns. He is 3-9 as a starter. He has completed 52.1 percent of his passes (194 of 353). He has thrown 10 touchdown passes and nine interceptions.

Quinn completed 13 of 31 passes vs. Baltimore, 21 of 33 vs. Detroit, 15 of 34 vs. Cincinnati, 25 of 45 vs. San Diego, 9 of 16 vs. Pittsburgh and 10 of 16 vs. Kansas City after getting his job back when Anderson was benched last season.

I could be wrong (maybe it was said previously, I didn't read the replies)... but, I think their mentality and character are likely very very different allowing Gannon to do things after a few years of failure that Quinn is simply not capable of doing.

Of course there is a chance. To say otherwise is pretty short sighted. Perhaps he has been humbled and has worked harder on learning the game instead of just relying on raw talent. Someone posted he sits in the pocket and takes forever to make a decision, but hey that's an upgrade for us! A QB that actually surveys the field!

He doesn't have to be Gannon.

He needs to protect the football and connect with wide open WR's...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

So he sucked in Cleveland. So what, who hasn't? He never got a chance in Denver because of Tebow Mania, and in both Denver and Clevland he never really had anything to work with. Here, he is stepping into a job wih a top 10 O-line, one of the best RB's in the league, and a great group of receivers. Match that with Daboll not having to limit the Offense anymore since Cassel and his weak ass arm isn't there, and I think we could possibly have something. He was a 1st round pick for a reason, and opportunities don't get any more ideal than the one that is in KC right now. If he is any sort of the baller people thought he was coming out of ND, I think we may have a surprise on our hands...

Tebowmania happened at all because Quinn sucked too much to start.

I agree that he never really had a fair shot in Cleveland or Denver. He's got all the tools here to succeed - give the kid a shot. If he stinks, we draft better. If he turns things around, seriously, it's not like we'd need 11 more wins to take this shit division.

I do feel bad for Quinn, much as I felt bad for Romeo. Cleveland was/is just not a good place. I hope that one of 3 things happens, however unlikely.

A) Quinn steps in, performs wonderfully, we make it to the AFCC game and have a good showing from Quinn, proving that he is a new QB who is finally developed and ready to lead a team on deep playoff runs

B) Quinn sucks and helps us get Geno Smith

C) Quinn sucks, Stanzi starts and either leads us to the AFCC game or sucks and gets us Geno Smith.

Option C is the least likely scenario. I hope that if Quinn has success, it is at a high level, not piddling around and helping this team go 7-9 to 9-7 and enter the playoffs, get smashed, and ruin our chances of getting Smith or even Barkley/Wilson.

So, for me to truly want Quinn to succeed, he better make ****ing clutch throws on 3rd and long, go through progressions, and look like a 1st round QB who has had time to analyze the game and be much improved from when he first entered the league.

Simply being adequate isn't enough at this point and will be more detrimental in the long run than Quinn just sucking, IMO.

Gannon was a below average passer with above average running skills in a system optimized for him. You could scheme against him by guarding the field between the hash marks, since he didn't have the arm to throw outside beyond 10 yards. Tampa broke the code and after that Gannon had no other option. Grueden could never get that scheme cooking in Tampa. Why? Because it was a gimmick that wasn't that hard to crack. Geez, aim higher people. Sometimes I think this fan base is afraid of getting a real QB.

For a QB, if you don't think your guy is a future HOFer, you have the wrong guy. It's as simple as that.

People also forget that Gannon put up the same stats as Grbac did when he was here.
