The biggest football mistake (sniff) Marty Schottenheimer ever made.

NFL Network keeps playing the clip of a tearful Marty saying this as part of their "football story" series. Anyone know what the mistake is? Any speculation?

It's a football mistake, so I'm assuming it's not a "didn't visit DT in the hospital type of thing. But he's tearful, so you would presume that it's a personal element and not something like "should've started Gannon instead of Grbac".

It seems like he made a few mistakes with Greg Hill, such as not starting him and sleeping with his girlfriend. But I'm not sure those rise to the level of "greatest mistake".

And I guess it could be something unrelated to the Chiefs since he coached for 1.5 other teams. (San Diego's not really a full team.)

What do we think Marty's biggest football mistake is? Give me some options and I'll put up a poll.

**** him.
There were two reasons his post-season record was horrible. One was that he became too conservative. But the other reason is that he was one of the best ever at coaching up bad teams into respectable regular-season records. Sometimes those bad teams lost to better teams in the playoffs.

I wish Marty hadn't left the Chiefs when he did. We would have had some very good times with him for another 10 years or so.

And yes, Grbac over Gannon was one of the worst decisions in NFL history. I was just as pissed about that as GoChiefs and SNR are about Alex Smith. (The difference is that I didn't want to be proven right).

The man knew how to win regular season games for sure. Play a tough D, have a positive turnover ratio and a solid run game and a team will win alot of regular season games yes.

That's what people forget when they blast Marty's post-season record. If not for the The Drive and The Fumble, he would have taken the Browns to the Super Bowl in back to back seasons. There's no way you can blame him for the drive. Well, I suppose you can if you insist upon doing so, but John Elway was pretty good at 4th quarter comebacks.

But there's no ****ing way anyone can blame him for Ernest Byner's fumble at the goal line at the end of the AFC championship game the following year. He had horrible luck two years in a row, and it probably influenced the way he coached in the post-season the rest of his career.

That's a very interesting point at the end. I'd never thought about that.

If you can't tell, I really hate John Elway.

I like you. You're a great addition around here.

I remember Jimmy Johnson saying that the kicker "lost his confidence" and Johnson immediately let him go, knowing that he was cooked. Then we signed him.

Interestingly, the kicker does have one of the highest field goal percentages in Chiefs history. I think people forget that in light of, you know, destroying her souls and spirits.

Grbac/Gannon discussion is just silly nonsense. They were the exact ****ing player in Kansas City. Stats were identical. Its about as stupid as the Lin Elliot bullshit on this board as well.

Um, no they weren't. That's the problem with relying purely on stats: they don't tell the whole story. When Grbac broke his collarbone and Gannon was the starter, the Chiefs were playing the best football in the NFL. Hell, they BLEW OUT and totally dominated a 49er team that was 11-1 at the time. When Gannon was benched for Grbac right before the playoffs, it was like flipping a switch. The Chiefs lost their leader and their mojo, and they lost in the playoffs. Worst decision ever.

Poindexters who like to make their arguments strictly with stats are the same guys who insist that Mike Trout of the (losing) Angels is a more valuable player than Miguel Cabrera (Triple Crown winner of the winning Tigers).

Try watching the games instead of just reading the stats.
