Even if this were a 32 team playoff and the Chiefs played the worst team in football, they would find a way to lose.

I'm not necessarily for or against the idea, but I'm not sure why people think this would "water down" the playoffs.
Going back 10 years, there's not a single team that would have gotten in with less than an 8-8 record. Matter of fact - of the 20 teams - there are as many with 11-5 and 10-6 records as there are with 8-8 records. 70% had 9-7 records or better. |

Arizona would have made it in the NFC... without looking real close at tie breakers for 4 8-8 teams, I think Pittsburgh in the AFC. It's basically letting in a couple of 9-7/8-8 teams every year, except for like the year the Patriots won 11 games and didn't make it or the Browns and Chiefs won 10 games (in different years). I guess the league is already watered down enough that it doesn't really matter... wild card weekend will just be an extension of the regular season when it comes to the quality of football, not much different than it is now.

What about implementing having the players wear flags to pull? When does that start?

The reason this proposal has legs is because it deals with those who want to expand the regular season. By expanding the playoffs the NFL gets the revenue it and the players want but don't have to go to an 18 week season. This is why there is talk of wild card weekend having Sunday night and Monday night games because it's going to print money.
I really like the proposal for a couple reasons 1. Wild Card Weekend will be crazy with a lot of games. 2. I hate it that 4 teams get guys, this way only the top teams in each division get byes. 3. Arizona would have made the playoffs in the NFC, and the Steelers would have made it in the AFC. The Steelers were a .500 team this year, but you shouldn't judge this proposal on what would have happened this year. Think back to when the Chiefs were 10-6 and got screwed. I don't think anyone would have a problem with the 10-6 Cards going in this year. |

Doesn't the players association have to approve it as well?

I know the ship has already sailed on this, but that's the way it should be--the BEST teams move ahead. But pro sports aren't really set up for integrity, they're set up to maximize revenue.

14 out of 32 is still less than half, so it isn't intolerable to me. I like the idea of giving the #1 seed extra value with the exclusive bye - it means less coaches will rest their starters *ahem* on the last week of the season.

Ideally, to me, only the 4 division winners get in, with one exception rule. Any division winner with 8 or fewer wins is replaced by the best non division winner.

I'll take this over an 18 week season, no doubt about it.

And they are going to continue to get in as long as the NFL continues to give more weight to winning your division. Adding one more (likely) 9-7 or better team isn't going to water anything down. |
