Chiefs sign Raiders DT Vance Walker

The Chiefs, who suffered some personnel losses early in free agency, have added a defensive lineman from a division rival.

The club said Friday night it had reached a deal with Raiders defensive tackle Vance Walker. Terms were not disclosed, but ESPN’s Josina Anderson reports the contract is for three years and worth up to $13 million, with $3.75 million in guarantees.

Walker (6-2, 305) played and started 15 games for the Raiders in 2013, recording 40 tackles and three sacks. He would seem a good fit at defensive end in the Chiefs’ 3-4 front, though it’s possible he could spell Dontari Poe at nose tackle on occasion.

A sixth-year pro from Georgia Tech, the 26-year-old Walker was a seventh-round pick of the Falcons in 2009 and played four seasons for Atlanta. He signed a one-year contract with the Raiders last offseason. Now, after a solid stint as a starter for Oakland, he’s reportedly getting a multi-year deal with Kansas City.

The Chiefs also announced the re-signing of reserve outside linebacker Frank Zombo. News of Zombo’s return came earlier in the week.

I'm pretty sure the Chiefs signed George Takei to play DE. His twitter feed is nothing but random stuff that he likely borrowed from somewhere else on the internet.

pass rush = Walker > Jackson
run defense = Jackson > Walker

we exchanged rush defense for pass defense

considering the NFL now, it might not be a bad trade

Although this is true, I think the gap in pass rushing ability far exceeds the gap in run defense.

I think we now have an all around more valuable player, at nearly half the cost as well.

Every time the Chiefs sign a player, the movie Moneyball always comes to mind and the part where Bean brings up Scott Hatteberg, and every scout in the room is like, "who?!"

Vance Walker video interview from 2009. Seems like a good guy who worked his way up in the league.
