Mission accomplished.
As you know, I got tickets to this show primarily to appease my daughter, who is a huge Queen fan. On that front, last night was an unmitigated success. She hooted and screamed, stomped and clapped, and I'm pretty sure she didn't sleep at all last night after we got home. Let me start with the show itself. The storyline is cliched and the whole thing is campy and over-the-top. In many ways, it's a typical Broadway show. If you hate contemporary pop music as much as I do, you'll definitely appreciate a lot of the humor, even if it is pretty sophomoric. Just to put that comment in perspective, my daughter is 12 and she thought the show was absolutely hilarious. Even though I wouldn't go that far, there were several instances that made me really laugh hard. Obviously in a show like this, the story is secondary to the music. I'm not the world's biggest Queen fan, so that might color my impressions somewhat. I'm also a 40-year old dude, so futuristic love stories aren't really my cup of tea either. I thought there were sections of the show that just lacked punch, for lack of a better a term. The composer obviously used songs to fit individual scenes and this produced an overall show that was overwhelmingly good in some places but a bit boring in others. With Queen, it really comes down to the vocals - Freddie's voice absolutely makes a song like "Somebody to Love" more than just a silly love song and that comes through in the show. On the flip side, I don't really see anything redeeming in "Radio Ga Ga" or "A Kind of Magic", both of which appear in the show to support the storyline. They support the story well but as "rock" songs, well...they just aren't. I will say again though that the the good parts were REALLY good. For individual performances, the male and female leads were UNBELIEVABLY good. They made the whole show really. They were that good. Some of the secondary performers were very good as well. A good majority of the show's comedy comes from one character (you'll know who he is almost right away) and he had a great delivery and was pretty funny. About the only character I didn't like was the primary antagonist. It's a female character and from both the storyline and the vocal music, it just felt forced, almost out of place, compared to the rest of the show. Without revealing too much, the character has a definite Motown/R&B vibe that just doesn't fit with Queen music, IMO. Finally, the band was great, even though we really didn't get to see them much. The music was spot on. My only complaint would be with engineering - there were cases where the music completely drowned out the vocals which for a show like this really shouldn't ever happen. |

I would highly, highly recommend this.
I saw it in the West End in London about 3 weeks ago (right before it ended a 12-year run). It's a hell of a lot of fun, and pretty damn funny, too.

I can't say this enough:
My Dad is a big Queen fan and so is my daughter. For me, they're "aight" kinda like Rush or Thin Lizzy. I like them but they're not in my top 10 or anything. Despite that, I really liked the show. About the only thing I can add was that, at certain points in the show, my brain kept telling me I was watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I even said at one point "this gives me a Rocky Horror vibe". To which my daughter replied "what's that? Should I watch it?" |

It's bubble gum sap, just like "You're My Best Friend". Compared to "Seven Seas of Rhye", "Keep Yourself Alive", or "Killer Queen", it's weak.
If you compare it to songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody", "We Are the Champions", "Stone Cold Crazy", or "Under Pressure"...well, never mind...there's no comparison. |

I have to admit. One other thing that bugged me was the profuse throwing of horns by both the cast and the audience (made up mostly of sexagenarians in gowns and ****ing sport coats).
Seriously, just by looking at the audience, you might have thought it was a goddamn Jimmy Buffet concert and these gray haired fat women are throwing horns! Maybe I'm just a purist but for me, those horns are "metal". They really have no place at a Broadway show, even one featuring the music of Queen. |
