Giving Alex the 'Joe Flacco Treatment'

The contract talks between the Chiefs and Alex Smith is our big story right now. Especially with his old squad signing Kaepernick today.. this situation gets more and more interesting. A couple of observations of our team...

Defensively, we are as stacked as we are going to be for a long time this season. Chances are we won't play another season with all the talent we currently have on that side again (Hali older, Houston/Berry/Poe with extensions in the nearer future)

Offensively, if all the OTA talk is real and Alex is really playing as well as they say (and the WR's such as Bowe), we are a solid offensive line from perhaps a top 10 offense.

It's fair to say the 'window' is as wide as it will ever be. With possible big contributions from Kelce, Commings, Knile, and other 1st/2nd year players, we may have a Super Bowl bound squad. Which is what leads me to this though: Let the season play out before signing Alex. If he plays well, a playoff win or two? Sign him for 100 million. If he wins a Super Bowl? Give him whatever he wants and a key to the city. If he and the team bombs? Let him walk and use Murray or Bray, use the money to keep our defensive stars.

This is the right plan, imo. Discuss.

Mike DeVito is a slouch? Take him away and watch teams run all over the next guy up. Our corners are better than you think. Kendrick Lewis fucked them all year.

In a passing league, DeVito is a run stuffer who provides little to no pass rush.

Our corners lack versatility.

Brandon Flowers is a solid man corner, but is better suited to zone, and is apparently declining physically.
Sean Smith is a man corner who never met a zone he liked.

Marcus Cooper, Ron Parker and Phillip Gaines are all unproven potential.

Seattle - Stacked.

SF - Stacked and more stacked in the secondary now.

Cardinals - even without Washington, they are still a dominant defense because of two key players, Campbell and Peterson. Dockett isn't like what he was a few years ago, but he's still plenty good.

Rams- Scariest pass rushing front 4 in the league with the addition of Donald.

Saints- Not a lot of names but they're absolutely a better unit with Rob Ryan commanding them and the young combo of Cameron Jordan and Kenny Vaccaro anchoring the team.

Cincy- Stacked, especially their front.

Broncos- Miller dropped back down to his dominant weight, Ware is there now, Ward, Wolfe is back, Knighton still wrecking, And Talib has joined them. They're stacked.

Bills - Williams, Dareus, Hughes, Alonso, Gilmore, etc.

Browns - Should be a dominant unit, they're always good and have a better secondary than us.

Texans- Still have the goods to be absolutely dominant. Watt should have it easier this year with Clowney now in the mix. Scary potential there alone on top of their other talent.

If I had to guess, I would say we end up around 12-16 in total defense this coming season.

The Jets

That's 6 off the top of my head.
The Jets?

Honestly I think if you compare them position by position I doubt you'd come to the same conclusion.

They do have a great defensive coach, which KC does not have. Talent? I'd take KC in a heart-beat over the jets as they are right now purely on talent.

Umm...

The players you allude to are all probowlers/all pro players.

How many of those do you think we need? I think 5-6 is a lot for one group. Not many teams are secure in that many positions.

We look good on paper but look like crap on the field. It's as simple as that. Tells me two things:

1. Our "talent" isn't as good as we think it is.

2. Our defensive coaching staff isn't up to scratch.

Our secondary is very average with Berry realistically being the only player who would start on most other teams. We only have one starting caliber ILB, Derrick Johnson. We only have 1 legitimately dominant DL player, and that's Poe; DeVito is next to useless in this passing league and there are question marks at the other position. Hali is aging, Houston is only good for games against rookies or back-up level OTs, and Ford is a rookie.

How are we "the most talented" defensive roster?

The problem is the rest are liabilities...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

I'm sure if all 16 things in a row you listed in the OP went right, Alex would get a Flacco-type deal.

And if we win the Super Bowl, they can pay him all the money he wants.

If Alex Smith wins a Super Bowl in KC, Clark should give him ownership stake in the team.
