Roy Halladay, 40, dies in plane crash in Gulf of Mexico

Roy Halladay, a two-time Cy Young Award-winning pitcher who retired from baseball nearly four years ago, has died in a plane crash in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida. He was 40.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Department confirmed that a small single-engine aircraft piloted by Halladay was reported down in the Gulf of Mexico earlier Tuesday afternoon.

Halladay recently received his pilot's license and tweeted photos last month of himself standing next to a new ICON A5 plane, which was the model of aircraft that was recovered Tuesday in the Gulf.

Halladay was an eight-time All-Star and went 203-105 with a 3.38 ERA in his 16-year career with the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies. He threw a perfect game during the 2010 season and a no-hitter that postseason.

I live about 30 minutes from where Halladay lived. I have a prop plane airport about 5 minutes from my house. A lot of hobbiest's fly down here because of the beaches, water and beautiful scenery.

They crash a lot. It's been a topic of discussion to move the airport, mandate "X" number of years flying experience to take a plane off from around our area. This year alone we have had two planes crash into heavily populated areas. It's just a matter of time before innocent people get killed because of the lack of experience by some hobbyist pilot.

Lot of dangerous things in this world. I suspect we will find that he was flying low over the water like on his facebook page. We all think we are invincible in this world then a little wind gust ends it all. I see just as bad stuff happens behind the wheel with a cell phone in the drivers hand. See on the news a whole family loses its life as it runs into back of a slowdown on the highway at full speed. The news wont say but its obvious what happened. When your times up its up hopefully we all go peacefully some dont.

Evidently his dad was a commercial pilot and Roy's been flying since before he was in the big leagues. By many accounts a pretty good pilot.

Sounding like he was maybe in an aggressive climb while horsing around a bit, a gust caught him, pushed the nose over and he simply didn't have the altitude to recover.

At low tide and in maybe 5 feet of water, he may as well have flown it into a mountain. I doubt he had it wide open but would it be at all surprising if he went in at 90+?

This may have been less an issue of experience and more one of hubris.

I have a buddy of mine who is a pilot, but has a light sport craft. He says the exact same thing. The guys that aren't legit pilots that get into these crafts treat them like a go-kart - "how can you get hurt, it's just a go-kart...."
