That's kind of sad. I guess we always want to judge these people by the roles they play, and damn near all the time it's not even close to what they're really like.

I passed up an opportunity to meet Shatner a couple of years ago when he was doing a personal appearance at a local movie theater. Having heard so many shitty celebrity stories, I decided against it. I think if Captain Kirk had been a dick to me in real life, it would have irreparably damaged my psyche.

And I find it funny how writing went at the time. Jim Nabors wanted to sing, so at some point they made a plot line that let him go around singing. It didn't fit into the show, but whatever. Just put it on. It reminds of Steve McQueen agreeing to be in The Great Escape only if they let him do some sort of motorcycle stunt, because he liked motorcycles. The producers said, "Eh, whatever. Put in a motorcycle scene."

Maybe that still happens today and we don't hear about it.

He had a hell of a voice, I will give him that. Hard to put that voice with Gomer Pyle's personality though!

My first memories of that show are black and white, but yeah they did go color later iirc

I was bad about that as a kid, outside of early Gomer and Gilligan... black and white was DEAD

That transition was confusing to me, but maybe it's because I was only six years old when we got a color TV.

We had a black and white TV first, and the networks would tout shows in color. But they weren't in color for me. And then we got a color TV and all of the reruns were in black and white. The world made no sense.

My mom had a Christmas record of him singing. I was very very young back around 1970 but I remember being shocked that it was the same guy singing "Go Tell it on the Mountain" as the guy playing Gomer on TV.

He had a great voice and had a great run.

The 1960's had some very odd situation comedies. Gomer Pyle was on during the most deadly years of the Vietnam War. During 1965-1967 the DMZ was called by the grunts "The Dead Marine Zone." So watching Pyle be this happy screw up was really bizarre. Charlie would have offed him in a week.

Hogan's Heroes was even more bizarre. I think it was Gilbert Gottfried who said "Imagine the pitch meeting at CBS. Bing Crosby was the executive producer. He goes into a meeting and says Fellahs...we have this idea for a show. It's in a German POW Camp in the middle of Nazi Germany. The prisoners can escape, but they stay there to sabotage the Nazis. Oh, and it's a comedy!"

And there was a weird fascination with rural stuff. Andy Griffith and Mayberry, the Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, and Gomer Pyle as a spinoff.

I'm still curious why they made Gomer a screwup marine in the middle of the Vietnam war. That was a bold choice. The show could have worked just as easily if he had moved to New York and worked in a restaurant or something.

Yea...can you image someone trying to make Hogans Heros in todays overly PC era?
