I don’t know that I love my new job

So long story short, the building that I specifically maintained and worked on was shut down as a Covid casualty and sold to a car dealership (which plans to demolish the building. It’s on the west side of 67th and I-35 for the locals). I’ve been working there for approximately 5 years.

I truly enjoyed my time there but the deal is I was contracted through a company that doesn’t do what I did. Now to find my new role within the company I have taken a slight demotion in role and am basically attempting to learn an entirely new field and it’s cool to learn new things. It’s commercial HVAC. Not easy by any means, but I got my EPA cert and all that good stuff so far. But I don’t love what I’m doing anymore. And that part is worrisome. I want to stick around because I think the upside of the work is amazing if I can stick through it all, but truthfully it’s not that fun to me.

My main question for you guys is what made you fall in love with your craft/job/expertise? I wanna love what I do, and it’s been discouraging to not feel that way as much lately despite the fact I do like the company I work for. I need to find my trigger that’ll ignite my passion.

Have you considered starting a business in your field or a related field?

Your goal is to maximize your happiness 24 hours a day and sustain or improve that in the future. If you don't like your job, evaluate how it's impacting your current overall life and your future. If it's making those things great, maybe it's worth it, though you can still look around. If it's not making those things better, ditch it.
Absolutely this.

I really think loving your job is overrated. Most of the people in my field that LOVE their jobs are divorced and such. Their job is the only thing they have in the end because a job almost always takes more than it gives.

To me, a job is a means to an end. A way of making money so I can enjoy the 16 or so hours a day I'm NOT working. At the end of the day, it's work not play. Who wants to like their work so much that the play side of it takes a hit or worse, never happens at all?

They pay you to do it, liking it does matter though. Finding a job to be unbearable or unfair is when you leave.

Nobody likes his job. Even Mahomes dislikes what he does if you asked him to be honest, there’s pain and pressure and travel on and on.

I'd argue that your objective is maximize your personal utility over the course of your entire life. In almost every decision every day of everybody's lives, dudes are taking short term L's for long term wins.

I don't know what to tell the OP specifically, but I feel compelled to remind everyone that we're in it for the long haul.

Accept that you will never have a job you love. Shove your negative job-related emotions down into a pit in your stomach, and start drinking too much. Slog through every work week, doing just enough to not get fired for years on end, until you are finally old enough to retire as a total burnout. Die of a heart attack 2-3 years later. You're welcome!

Here's how I see it...

You will never "love" your job. That's some fairytale bullshit there. What you shouldn't do though is "hate" your job. You need to have the ability to tolerate what you do and at the same time find an environment where you feel comfortable. Maybe you don't enjoy sloshing around in people's basements and crawl spaces all day, but you may also not enjoy sitting in an office all day. You might like wearing a suit, or you might hate it. You might like people and "camaraderie" or you may not. So, in whatever it is you do decide to do, make sure that the factors/requirements around what you do are good for you. Case in point, if you hate wearing a suit and working in an office, then maybe being an accountant or a lawyer isn't the best fit for you.

At the end of the day though, you're going to have to make concessions too. You're going to have to deal with some aspect you don't particularly care for at least some of the time. Just be sure it isn't most of the time.

Also, don't be scared to leave a job for something else. I can tell you this, five years at one place is becoming a decent length of stay. People are leaving far more than ever for other opportunities, so you're not going to scare some HR person with it on your resume. Hell, I'm seeing 3 years max more than ever. I would recommend, however, having a job when trying to find a new one. Employers like seeing that you're leaving for something else on your terms and that you're employable.

Yeah, I think the best advice a person can get is to always make their decisions based on the long term. The payoffs may come slowly, but they accumulate over time if you have this philosophy.

I used to fly planes for a living and that became a boring job that I didn't really enjoy much anymore. Even flying to Florida, Cali, the Gulf, etc. became a boring chore.

I enjoy doing what most people find to be....boring. Floors. Weird world.

I don't love my job, but it could certainly be worse. Plus, whenever anyone asks me what i do for a living it sounds kinda cool and gives me a couple extra cool guy points.
