A Level Headed Review WK20

Sorry for the late thread. I’m out in the middle of the Atlantic at the moment enjoying cocktails.

1. Chad Freaking Henne - wow talk about CLUTCH. 98 yard drive when the Chiefs needed it the most. Some were talking about dumping him in favor of Buchele. This is why you have QBs like Henne on your roster. Nails when thrust into the unthinkable.

2. 21 MPH. That’s what Pacheco was clocked at on his 39 yard run. Just absolutely beautiful run. Been waiting for that run for quite a few weeks. He just motors with those legs like I have never seen a RB motor. He is gonna be really special when he gets the passing and protection packages down.

3. Jaylon Watson . What an incredible INT to kill the Jags drive. 2 of the biggest interceptions this year have been from 7th round pic. The Chargers pick 6 was a fore shadowing of his skills. Vurt Beach has hit grand slams with his 7th rounds picks.

4. Defense in general absolutely stepped up and shut down Jax when we needed them to. Frank Clark and Nandi with HUGE sacks at critical times. Cook showed his immaturity with the penalty but I’m sure he will be fine with more playing time and mentoring.

5. Patrick Mahomes with the balls of steel to play thru the injury. not a lot of guys would try and push thru the pain to stay in the game. It shows a lot to everyone that Pat isn’t going to quit at the first sign of trouble. Kudos to Andy for reeling him in a bit and making him fix himself before permanently wrecking himself.

6. McKinnon is an absolute beast in pass protection to call him Pats personal pass protection is an understatement. He absolutely destroyed a Jax defender on a blitz and helped keep Mahomes clean in the second half. He is a must re-sign, hopefully his little use early in his career can translate into a longer career on the backend.

7. Offensive line. They were a little rough at the beginning of the game but as soon as Pat got hurt they stepped up and provided clean pockets for Henne and Mahomes when he came back. Absolutely solid.

8. Kelce - what else is there to say? Absolute beast, another record broken. Another step closer to 1st ballot HOF career. Stepped up big to be “the guy” the offense needed to get past a good Jax team.

9. Toney. Wirey and hard to tackle. This guy is legit a crazy weapon. He had some huge plays for us and seemed to get the extra yards because he is just hard to tackle. For those of us that wrestled - you know the wirey guy is hard to take down because he contorts his body in ways were aren’t used to. That is Toney. Swart Cheech with another grand slam.

10. MVS -has been bagged on all season because of low production. All he did was catch critical first downs. Today he caught a critical TD. I’ll take this all day everyday every year. It’s clutch and sometime you just need clutch.

How do you figure his arm isn’t there? All of his passes were quick strike move the ball down the field passes. They never asked him to go deep. I don’t think Henne has ever been accused of being a running QB. He makes his money standing tall in the pocket and finding the open guy. He CAN run but it’s not pretty and only when it’s dire.

I don't doubt you for a second. I still don't think it is worth the risk just in case it is still "Hamlin good".

Make 'em go 75 yards for a TD every time.

Unless someone on the team said it was, you have no idea if it is Toub or Butkers lingering injury.

Hard to tell over the telee.
It was meh. I’ve definitely been to games that were louder and more energetic. In fairness though, the cold damp air probably muffled the sound a bit.

So, what does it take to call false start on #75 of the Jags? He jumped early all through the Chargers game and wasn't called, which is partly what caused the Bosa meltdown. Then yesterday, he jumped early on almost every pass play the Jags ran. I noticed he never jumped early on run plays or those quick sideways passes but he did if Lawrence was going to drop back.

This isn't a blame the refs post. It's just weird that it's never called when it's so blatant.

The main difference between CEH and Pacheco? On that 39 yard run, when Pacheco ran into the back of his offensive lineman and then bounced it out? We all know that CEH doesn't even attempt that. He'd **** around behind the line and get tackled for a 2 yard loss.

I just looked up the NFL rankings for special teams performance and in punt return coverage and kick return coverage Chiefs are either middle or top third. Better at covering pun ts than kicks but not abysmal at either. I was surprised at the big returns yesterday, not used to seeing that.

https://www.lineups.com/nfl-team-rankings/special-teams

Also, STOP RUNNING UP THE GUT ON THIRD AND ONE! Lord above, seems like it NEVER works. Twice yesterday it failed. I trust the coaches but this one factor seems super frustrating. And going into the AFCCG with Mahomes injured, seems we'll rely on the run more, and this better be a focus this week.

OR.

I was really expecting to see more misdirects, jet sweeps, shovel pass type plays but I guess if the protection breaks down there's no plan B for Mahomes now.

Line drive kicks will cause that to happen.

The interior of the Chiefs offensive line is a strength, but for whatever reason that has’t translated to success running up the middle on 3rd and 1.

It’s almost as if the Chiefs offense collectively has a case of the yips trying to convert 3rd and 1… there seems to be no obvious answer as to why the Chiefs offense can’t figure out that high % play.

He jumped early on the play they called on Clark. Clark jumped early, but it was at the same time the tackled stood up. Surprised they didn't mention it again. The guy did it several times, but that one really stood out.

eh, his arm doesn't have a lot of juice left in it, as far as I can tell. There was that right side crosser route (iirc it was a crosser) about 5 yards past the LoS; he made the pass, but it was slow enough to make the receiver have to slow down and turn his body to get it. And it barely got there. And it's not the first time that we've seen his throws to the outside just not have much zip to them. And they flat out don't ask him to go deep.

Arm strength, or lack of, is one of the reasons I wanted Matt Moore over Henne coming into the season, but I can see after yesterday's performance why Andy wanted Henne. He's just a more consistent operator of the base offense. He goes through his progressions and reads the situations better than Moore did. And when you need consistent execution vs. big throws in a playoff game, well you really want the former. You really want the consummate professional, like Henne, in those situations.
