According to Adam Sheffter of NFLN.

Just saw on the ticker.

Chiefs receive the Vikings 1st round pick (17) and both 3rd round picks (73,82) in the 2008 draft.

Jay Glazer, of FOXSports.com, reports the Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms on a contract with Kansas City Chiefs DE Jared Allen. The Vikings will give the Chiefs their 2008 first-round draft pick, two third-round picks and the teams will swap sixth-round picks with the Vikings acquiring Allen. Allen has also agreed to terms on a six-year deal worth just under $74 million with $31,000,069 guaranteed. No. 69 is his jersey number.

The starters come from the fact that some proportion of players in each round become starters. Some proportion - far less than 100 percent.

If you trade a starter for someone who might be a starter, you will at best break even on a pure numbers basis, and the odds are that you will lose.

You went through that list of third-rounders and told me how many were starters. (I think that was you - someone did.)

You get starters by having a bunch of picks and playing the odds. It's free to play the odds when you don't have to give up anything for the picks, so every year every team gets seven free pulls on the draft slot machine. (The Broncos get more since they always get compensatory picks for cheating.)

Everyone wins when the slot machine pulls are free. In our case, we had to pay to get three pulls on the slot machine. The odds tell us that we'll lose. Maybe we'll beat the odds and win, but the odds are clearly against us.

One other note: the average career of a starter is notably longer than the average NFL career. Starters last a lot longer because teams can't draft anyone better, so they can extend their careers. This means that a starter is worth more.

I don't know how many times you'll hear it uttered, but it rings true again: the bulk of every successful team is built in rounds 2-5. This isn't Major League Baseball. Draft picks hit far more often and are much less risky (although they still carry some risk) than they do in other sports.

Some of the guys I didn't embolden were guys like Landon Johnson, who averaged over 100 tackles a year, Sean Locklear, who is one of the best lineman for the Seahawks, Bernard Berrian, Max Starks, Stu Schweigart, Alex Smith, Eric Green, Trai Essex, Leroy Hill, and guys like Brandon Jones and Ryan Moats are contributors.
