Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

He'd be off to a really good start if he turned down offers to trade down to pick Joeckel and also spent a 2nd on a backup QB.

Is there...really a chance that Dorsey is a master genius, and orchestrated this whole Albert trade thing to drum up interest in 1.1?

Because if it goes down that way...and we get a haul...Dorsey has pulled off the single greatest GM move in team history.

And if he still gets Geno (at 7 or 12)...holy ****ing shit.

Dare to dream.

I want to believe but I know that it will just end with Albert being shipped out and us drafting a LT at 1.1.

I'm not sure if I want them to somehow take Geno because I think it's the best thing, or because I want to see Teicher and the true fans flip their shit. I'm moving towards the latter.

That said, It's really all about Branden Albert...and there seems to be a stream of thought (Rapaport) that Dorsey does like him. My hope is that Miami decides they'd rather save the money by drafting Joeckel (he would be cheaper than Albert), a young guy with no wear-and-tear, who has familiarity with that system and QB as opposed to Albert. Then they move up to #1, give us a few picks, and we extend Albert and go get some talent.

That's best case.

I'm fully-expecting to wake up to an Albert trade and word that we have decided to draft Joeckel/Fisher. If so, I hope it's Fisher but will be pissed either way.

My opinion based on direct/indirect information:

Dorsey is a ****in master. He's giving Miami an option in BA that is great...best LT in the league. Has a back issue...Chiefs med team clears him. Signs Franchise tender. Chiefs open up trade market. Find a team willing to dance that needs a LT....

Dorsey: "Oh hey Ireland, you need a LT? We can send you BA for both #2's"

Ireland: "Hmmm, really? I like BA. How about our 2nd, 2nd round pick?"

Dorsey: "FOAD."

2 weeks later....

Ireland: "Ok...first 2nd round pick for BA."

Dorsey: "Ok, go have BA fly in, wine-him, dine-him, 69-him...work out an agreement....oh wait, the draft has 2 stud LTs available at #1.? Are you more interested in them? Jeff Ireland, would you like the guy that knows your system, has a fresh body and will be very affordable for 4-5 years? Oh, you do? Well that will cost you this much.

Jeff Ireland panics....

Dolphins get #1 pick, Chiefs stockpile picks.
Chiefs sign BA to a cap friendly deal and thank him for "going along" with the plan.

So your sources are continuing to say that the sides are talking? How much are they talking about the #1 pick and how much is about Albert?
