They didn't show that competitive desire to be great all season. They just expected their talent to carry them (and for the most part, with Embiid, it did). That's also part of the reason I was over that loss shortly after it happened, though. It wasn't a Self team like most of others, it was something quite different (and in fact, statistically, it was his worst since '05).

But yes, I agree, I think some of that came down to leadership. None of the team's core players (Wiggins, Ellis, Tharpe, Embiid) were really built that way. And while I know you hate him, but somebody like Marcus Smart with his fire would have done wonders for this particular group. Even 2012 Tyshawn would have been great.

Not even getting into their defensive issues, it's a bit disconcerting that Tharpe/Ellis are set to be core players again next year for this reason too. I only hope guys like Mason, Cliff, and Oubre can help bring what those two are lacking in 2014-2015.

Hopefully we won't have a problem with fire next year. I don't think I've ever seen him play without energy.

You know it's not like everybody was without energy. Since The WV game, Traylor showed tremendous effort. One guy doesn't do it.

But he's not a leader. Traylor played with energy. Black played with energy. Neither could instill a sense of urgency in their teammates.

It's nice, though, when a really great player doesn't NEED someone else to get him going. That seems to be the case with Alexander.

That's exactly how I felt after the game. I was over it and ready to forget about this team 30 minutes after we lost. They never really ever connected as a team at all during the season. I mean sure, they had a couple of games down the stretch were everything was looking pretty fluid, but it never looked unified with players you could look for in times were you desperately needed them. No one had that seniority or really stood up to claim it.

It almost looked as bad as losing to Bradley or Bucknell, we just didn't lose in the first round.
