Alex Smith to ask for release
http://tracking.si.com/2013/01/28/al...?sct=obnetwork
If no draft picks are involved, does that change your opinion on bringing him in? Draft pick, Smith, Stanzi(?) as your QB's in camp. |

Bringing in Alex Smith is committing to mediocracy for the next 3+ years.
We've seen Alex's ceiling last year and that was with a team full of incredible talent and a great defense. |

Again, the article says the Chiefs are one of the teams interested in Smith. Not me. It was the article.
The decision to aquire Alex Smith may need to be made before the draft, so if we do aquire Smith for a 4th or 5th, I am fine with it... provided we still give due dilegence to Geno Smith. And if we deem that he is worthy of the #1 overall pick then you roll with it and draft Geno #1 as well. Fantasy? Maybe. IMO, it doesn't have to be one or the other. |

And it's not a matter of him being afraid to compete, it's about being smart and not minimizing his chance to start. Chiefs fans are drastically overrating their franchise if they think he would be happy going from a backup QB to a Super Bowl contender, to a backup QB on a team drafting #1 overall. |

But it WILL be. We're talking about the NFL and specifically about the Chiefs. |

Matt Cassel took a team(that the year before went 16-0 and lost the super bowl) to a 11-5 record. They became the only team to go 11-5 and not qualify for the playoffs. Cassel didn't get the chance to win/lose in the playoff with a damn fine team.
Alex Smith's 2011 team went 13-3 and won one playoff game(after a first round bye). A first year starting QB in only his second year in the league. Took that team the next year to 13-3 and won two playoff games(after a first round bye) to the super bowl. Too close for comfort for me. |

Heres the thing for me:
Im trying to stay grounded in reality. According to people who do the gig for a living, there is no For sure Bet Qb in the draft. Im all for Smith or Wilson as our pick and I will be severly dissappointed if we dont draft one fo those two guys. Having said that, we also need a veteran QB on staff. There is no "Brady, Rodgers, Manning or Brees guy available. Therefore, we are going to get a guy that will not be the second coming of Montana. Therefore, Smith is a huge possiblity, whether we like it or not. So, Im trying to see the other side of it, look at his positives, so I dont hang myself the day it haappens. Now, if we sign Campbell, draft Smith or Wilson and one of those guys starts day one and shows us a real football season, Ill be stoked. But, Im mentally preparing for something a little elss than that, becuase with the QBS out there, that may be the case. Thats not a Chiefs fan mentality, it just seems like a bad year for Qbs, draft and FA wise.

Alex Smith is a STARTER, he's not a backup. If he's going to come here, he's going to START. You're right, he's not Brees or Brady. He's QB purgatory. |

Nick Foles with his 2012 3rd round salary makes more sense to me than Alex Smith.

Well hes a starter if he hits FA, and then like Toooge pointed out, thats not necesarily gauranteed. If hes traded, he is whatever the team says he is.
