Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Report: Dolphins don’t think Albert’s worth a second-rounder
Posted by Josh Alper on April 25, 2013, 10:43 AM EDT

Getty ImagesChiefs General Manager John Dorsey said Wednesday that compensation coming back from the Dolphins is the sticking point in the Branden Albert trade talks and a report from Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post may explain the hangup.

Volin heard from a source Thursday that the Dolphins don’t believe trading a second-round pick is worth what they’d be getting in return. There’s no word on what the Dolphins would prefer to pony up to acquire Albert as the clock ticks on their chance to swing a deal before the moment passes both teams by.

Any trade for the tackle would include a long-term deal with Albert believed to be looking for something in the neighborhood of $9 million a year to put his name on the dotted line, a neighborhood the Dolphins weren’t willing to travel to when Jake Long wound up signing with the Rams. Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that the Dolphins are on board with the financial compensation for Albert, which meshes with Dorsey’s comments about the trade compensation being the snag.

Signing Long wouldn’t have cost them any picks, obviously, so it’s reasonable to believe that the Dolphins think Albert is the better player for their offensive scheme. Whether that’s enough to push them to give up what the Chiefs are looking for in an Albert trade looks like one of the biggest questions we’ll have answered in the next few days.

Cool. So lets keep him, trade with another team, and move on...

Trent Green was not mediocre...Trent Green or Joe Flacco...take Green every time.

That's ok, Dolphins. We'll let you trade up to 1.1 to draft Joeckel though.

Exactly - pound sand Jeffrey.

We'll let Albert play under the tag this season, draft Jordan @ 1 and the Fin's can peel Tannehill off the field by week 5.

Seriously.....Ireland is ****ing reeruned. He overplayed his hand this entire offseason.

He dicked around with Jake Long hoping that he could sign him to a cheap deal. As soon as Long as gone.....Ireland knew he was ****ed. He HAS to overpay for something at this point.
