Bomb Exploded at Boston Marathon Finish Line

I've heard an unconfirmed report (a co-worker's girlfriend called him) that there was a bomb at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, with people injured. I am hearing multiple sirens, though I'm not in the Copley area.

It always weirds me out when people talk about Boston's racial past -- and it's not entirely unfounded -- because of how much time I spend in Allston and the Back Bay (where this is all going down) and Cambridge-type areas which are basically defined by the presence of hipsters and queers and people of color. (in other words, the cool parts)

I'm unable to find either an AP or Reuters version of either the story or the refutation, so I'm suspecting this is an erroneous report.

Earlier they reported 12 confirmed dead and 50 confirmed injured.

How do you control an outside event like this? I mean a football game has a stadium where security can check bags etc.. Makes me wonder what the long term effect will be on these events. Think of all the Marathons, Tour de France etc... What a nightmare.

The general rule for these kinds of things is to take anything that's reported or broadcast on emergency radio with an enormous grain of salt until a day or three later.

It's incredibly difficult. The London Marathon is coming up next week (?)... I don't envy those planners. I guess all you can really do is have bomb dogs everywhere, and a huge security presence. It's sad...
