To Amazon Prime or NOT to Amazon Prime

Sorry if Q, but I'm on the fence about doing the whole Amazon Prime thing. Seems like getting rid of Netflix all but pays for it, but wanted to ask the opinions of others in this Mecca of awesome knowledge called Chiefs Planet..

Is Amazon Prime really worth it over eBay when you buy, let's say, 5-7 items a month? I ask because I always do the "price+shipping" deal, so it seem like it's a wash at some level. That being said, "Prime" would ALWAYS mean two-day shipping, and that's something I hardly ever do on eBay, so it could be a deal that makes it worth it enough to buy 15-20 things a month. The whole "eliminating some of the instant gratification culture/concern" deal...


Oh, and I've heard that if you use an "edu" account it's free for six months (perhaps not a big deal over a lifetime!!), but is then like half the cost. Does anybody know if that's true? If so, and it' the son who has the "edu" account, how does "Dad" pull off that scam without having the kid able to buy pretty-much anything he's ever wanted?

I buy these bars from Natural Grocers called "Perfect Bars". Here is just an example of how much more expensive Amazon is.

Natural Grocers price $1.99. I buy about 60 of them at a time so that is $119.40

They sell on Amazon $3.32 each. So that is $199.20. 60 usually lasts me about 1.5 months.

So basically, just for this ONE product I'm showing an example of, it costs me $638.40 more to shop at Amazon over the course of a year. FOR JUST ONE ITEM I buy.

You don't seem to understand how Amazon works.

It's a Market Place.

There are sellers from all over the world that list their items on Amazon and the item that you linked is from an "Outside Seller".

You're going to find the best deals from sellers that either use Amazon as their storing and shipping hub or from Amazon directly.

Also, the item you linked isn't eligible for Prime because it's an outside seller.

Yeah, so that is another thing I have to worry about, whether something I buy is eligible for Amazon Prime. If they don't, that means I'm going to the store anyway.

First off I use Prime and will continue to do so. Even with the state tax it is less than most of the places I can go to locally once you add city tax, TIFFS, TTDs, etc. But I did just place a order that showed it as prime originally but once ordered it states not prime eligible. I could cancel but for me the item doesn't require two day shipping. Had a few other orders that took way longer than two days that were prime but still took longer than two days. I guess I need to start being a squeaky wheel. Overall I like prime.

Also, on the side there is a 'Refine By' list, you select 'Prime" then all you will see is items eligible for Prime.

Just because you have prime doesn't mean you become a reeruned shopper. If somebody else has a product cheaper, I buy it there. 9 times out of 10, once you add shipping, Amazon Prime has either the cheapest price or the same price. That includes ebay.

If it's within a couple of bucks, I will use Prime just for the convenience, and the ability to send it back for a refund, free of charge and free of hassle, if I need to. Occasionally, you can find a much better price elsewhere, like I just found on a pair of shoes I just bought from someone other than Amazon. But it's pretty rare.

I agree with everything you said, but just to clarify, not ALL items are eligible for free returns. If it's broken, it's always free, and for a lot of specific categories (clothing especially) there are free returns as well, but I've had to pay a few bucks for return shipping here and there for products that were fine but just weren't what I was looking for.

While I agree with others that you just have to pay attention, I do wish there were an option to NEVER show results that weren't Prime eligible. I've seen some damn ridiculous prices from "marketplace" sellers.

I can't get into prime pantry either. I can find better deals at my local stores for many of the items, especially when tax is figured into it anyway. I have a $5 off coupon from doing no rush shipping on an order, so I may just have to place an order anyway but it looks like I also need to order a certain amount to not get ****ed on shipping or something? Prime Pantry seems way less smooth than regular Amazon.
