I'm assuming they mean along with a new contract to cover the guaranteed money in case the cancer kicks in again.

Yep, figured that'd be included. Shitty to bring up in negotiations and probably didnt help, but it has to be covered.

Then it's not really guaranteed money (if true).

Rand Getlin elaborated on this..

I'm told that policy was roughly $20M, which could have carried a $2M premium, which Berry was expected to pay.

Yea, i mean it's not nearly as shitty as it sounds IF they mean along with a new contract.

Think about it before people start crying foul.

Which is better?

1. Chiefs sign Berry to a new contract with 50 million guaranteed only to have cancer come back. Chiefs would have to go after that 50 million to cover their ass.

2. Chiefs sign Berry to a new contract with 50 million guaranteed only to have cancer come back. Instead of going after the 50 million guaranteed they just get the money back from a disability policy. Both Berry and the Chiefs win and the insurance company takes the hit.

It's not that unreasonable.

A lot of defensible business decisions look terrible in a lot of people's eyes because, shocking revelation here, people are idiots.

How is it a win for Berry if he's forced to use that money from the contract to pay for a premium that would only cover the Chiefs?

ONLY if the cancer comes back and Berry can't play

which is pretty reasonable all things considered.

When high risk players get a contract it's often covered with clause it the contract to protect the team. Some players are a risk for characters issues, some are a risk for health issues.

because the premium would be a fraction of the guaranteed money

40 million guaranteed/2 million premium = 38 million guaranteed

40 million guaranteed/2 million premium/cancer kicks in still = 38 million guaranteed for him + the chiefs get some relief from paying the bonus only to not have Berry playing.

people freaking over a basic business contract safety clause

The Chiefs aren't allowed to negotiate with Berry during the season.
