Offensive Coaches Talk From Wednesday’s OTA
by Bob Gretz The Chiefs made their coaching staff available to the media after Wednesday’s OTA, and coordinators and assistants on both sides of the football spent time answering questions. Here are some nuggets from the offensive side. Defensive coaching comments will come later. Offensive coordinator Doug Pederson on filling the holes left by free agency departures: “We’re rolling people in there right now. This is a time to experiment with different combinations at all positions. As we get closer to camp, things get ironed out a little bit more, and we’ll go into the season that way.” Quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy on the focus of the offense in this year’s OTA workouts: “Last year it was focused on the details; this year it’s more on detailing the details. We’re really honing in on the details of the game. For instance in a specific play, Alex (Smith) last year might be trying to learn the concept of the play, whereas now this year he’s really focusing in on not the concept of the play so much as maybe his footwork or whether he’s going to take a single hitch versus a double hitch on a five‐step play versus a seven‐step play. It’s really detailing the details more than it is just learning the concept of the play.” Wide receivers coach David Culley on OTA performance so far of Dwayne Bowe: “He’s been very good. He’s better at this point this year than he was last year. Basically he changed his routine. At this point in his career he decided that ‘Hey, I want to play a long time.’ In order to play a long time in this league you’ve got to have yourself right physically. And he’s done that.” Offensive line coach Andy Heck on development of tackle Eric Fisher from last year to now: “I think that’s a natural progression for an o‐lineman, especially a young, lean guy like him coming into this thing to just put on a few extra pounds. I think he feels good at his weight and he’s been working hard in that weight room, so I think it’s going to be a positive for him.” Running backs coach Eric Bieniemy on Jamaal Charles role as a leader: “I speak to Jamaal about that each and every day. You are the lead dog in this group. Your job is to be a professional and show these younger players what it takes to get to your status. First of all, Jamaal takes a tremendous amount of pride coming out here and working his tail off. Second, he takes a tremendous amount of pride of what he does in that weight room. More importantly, he takes a tremendous amount of pride in that classroom. All those things, combining the type of citizen he is, are going to show not just De’Anthony Thomas, but is still teaching Knile Davis and Cyrus Gray and all the other young players how to become a true professional in this industry.” Culley on undrafted rookie receiver Albert Wilson: “We were surprised that he wasn’t drafted because the kid can run. He did very well at the (NFL) Combine; I remember him specifically at the Combine running well. He came from Georgia State and it was a new program there and he did a great job against the competition that he had. He had a bunch of big plays. He’s come in here and he’s kind of caught our eye.” Pederson on first-year tight end Demetrius Harris and his transition from basketball to the NFL: “It was a valuable lesson for him to practice as a tight end last year; he got a lot of reps as a practice-squad tight end and as a show-team tight end. Now, coming in and the amount of reps he’s getting, it’s just making him better. He really is a smart guy. He’s picking up the system and he’s doing things right. We’re really excited to see his progress.” Bieniemy on what draft choice DeAnthony Thomas showed during rookie mini-camp: “I thought he did a great job. Obviously when those kids come to camp, you never know what to expect. I’ll tell you one thing, he blew our socks off. He was in great shape, he did an outstanding job of catching the ball and he did an outstanding job of running the ball. It was fun watching him work. I’ve seen him since high school so I know what he can do. It was just exciting having the opportunity to see him up close and in person.” |

Wednesday OTA observations, nuggets from coordinators
by Herbie Teope (highlights) • Special teams coordinator Dave Toub on rookie kicker Cairo Santos, an undrafted free agent out of Tulane: “I think Santos is an NFL kicker. Whether he’s kicking for our team or kicking for another team, he’s going to be in the NFL as a kicker. The ball just flies off his foot. He’s very talented, he’s very consistent in his technique. He’s a real good guy to have in camp right now.” • Toub on his philosophy to returners: “There’s a lot of touchbacks, but our philosophy is we’re coming out. Even if it’s 8 or 9 (yards) deep, we’re coming out with the ball. So if they want to get a touchback on us, they have to kick it out of the back of the end zone.” OTA observations: • Left tackle Eric Fisher (shoulder) remains limited to mostly individual drills and warm-ups, and isn’t participating in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 segments. But as Reid indicated last week, Fisher should be ready for training camp. • As with previous OTA sessions, tight end Travis Kelce (knee) and wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) are present, but not participating. While Williams wasn’t present for the first day of OTAs last week, he’s been present since. • During the first 11-on-11 segment, the first-team offensive line offered left tackle Donald Stephenson, left guard Jeff Allen, center Rodney Hudson, rookie right guard Zach Fulton and right tackle J’Marcus Webb. Wednesday was Fulton’s first run with the first team. • The second 11-on-11 segment towards the end of practice saw Rishaw Johnson replacing Fulton at right guard, and Jeff Linkenbach replacing Webb at right tackle. With Eric Fisher not participating in team drills, the Chiefs have used various combinations on the offensive line since the start of OTAs. • Rookie wide receiver Albert Wilson, running back Joe McKnight, wide receiver Weston Dressler and wide receiver Frankie Hammond have shared the majority of special teams repetitions at returner. Wide receiver Kyle Williams (knee) is often with the group behind the action. Look for rookie running back/specialist De’Anthony Thomas to join the mix when he returns from Oregon’s academic quarter system. • Free safety Husain Abdullah turned in a strong practice, recording two interceptions. Cornerback Ron Parker also recorded an interception, while cornerback Sean Smith dropped one. • The defensive secondary was very active during the 7-on-7 and 11-and-11 portions, as cornerbacks Marcus Cooper, Sean Smith, Chris Owens and Ron Parker all had pass breakups. • Tight end Demetrius Harris has consistently made athletic catches, but all the Chiefs tight ends have turned in solid performances during OTAs. Anthony Fasano looks 100 percent healthy from an injury-plagued 2013 season, while Sean McGrath and Richard Gordon are comfortable running routes and catching passes. • Easily the play of the day occurred when quarterback Chase Daniel delivered a perfectly thrown deep pass to rookie wide receiver Albert Wilson, who beat cornerback Chris Owens. The flip side to Daniel’s nice pass came later when he threw an interception right to free safety Husain Abdullah. |

With planet docs post...
Atleast with the Bowe stuff, I'm not hearing fluff... its sounds matter of fact. More Al Wilson love, wish they'd just shut up before they jynx him. Fisher, could Heck have been any more bland? not good. |

I said it as soon as we signed him and I'm not backing off now Alber Wilson WILL make the team. As Culley said it was a surprise he went undrafted, and if we would've had a 7th rounder I'm certain he would've been our choice.
