NFL Films' Greg Cosell recently noted that he thought Bowe looked slower than ever on tape last season. "I remember Ron Jaworski and I talking about that you know Week 7, Week 8," Cosell said on John Hansen's podcast. "We really thought Dwayne Bowe lost something. You know he was never a burner as you said, but he wasn't slow either. He wasn't a plodder. There were times last year I thought he kinda looked that way. So this is a very interesting year for Dwayne Bowe."

We will?

What's the cap damage and what does it free up?

He got a $15M signing bonus so if the Chiefs were to cut Bowe next year he would count at least $3M against the cap every year for the next three years.

Or he wasn't fully motivated to play football.

As in 1:00am trips to Sonic for post-ganj munchies seeming like a great idea.

It's not age.
It's commitment.

You have no idea how bonuses and the cap work.

I'm assuming everyone realizes that was a tweet about last season. Word from all over the place (in and out of KC) has been that Bowe hired a nutritionist and slimmed down this offseason, and I wouldn't be surprised to see that reflected in his play. As far as age goes, he should have at least a couple more years before that's an issue in any way, and probably longer since speed has never really been an integral part of his game.

That's how it works. A signing bonus is spread throughout the length of the contract as far as the cap goes.

EDIT: Here's a link for you milkman (from Andrew Brandt)

Quote:
One of the great myths about the NFL salary cap is that it is a hard cap. It is not; it is soft. The primary reason is allowing for the proration of signing bonuses, allocating for greater short-term cash than cap distribution while depositing the cap leftovers into the future.

Let’s use the Terrell Suggs’ recent extension with the Ravens as an example. Suggs was in the last year of his contract and scheduled to make $7.8 million. The Ravens increased that $7.8 million to $12 million with a completely different structure: $11 million signing bonus and $1 million salary. With the signing bonus now prorated over this year and four additional years, Suggs’ cap number—excluding previous unamortized proration—went from $7.8 million to $3.2 million, calculated as follows: $2.2 million of proration on the new bonus and $1 million salary.

Now, Suggs’ 2014 cash allocation is $12 million while his 2014 cap allocation is $3.2 million, a nearly $9 million “cash over cap” discrepancy on one player! This is how teams spend over the cap on a cash basis while staying under the cap. If and when Suggs is released in the next five years, which is more likely than not (he’s 32), his $2.2 million annual proration will accelerate, leaving the Ravens with a large cap charge for a player no longer there.

If we cut him prior to June 1st 2015, we have $10.5 million in dead money, and we have $3.5 million in cap savings.

If we cut him prior to June 1st, 2016, we have $6 million in dead money, and we have $7 million in cap savings.

Not sure what that all means, but it sounds like he's staying through next year.

Is Thomas going be allowed to wear #1 when the season starts? My son wants his jersey and I don't want to buy it yet if he is going to have to change numbers.
