To answer your earlier question, KU's basketball program has doubled in value, to $290m, since 2012 when the defections from the Big 12 happened:

How much could the monetary value of a program actually mean when Missouri is in the top 20?

What a Dumbass thing to care about.

I think his chart is from 2012. Mizzou was something then. Since then it's been nothing but mayday calls to anyone who might listen.

As a Missouri fan, I agree.

Besides, who cares about the monetary "value" of something that can't be bought or sold and doesn't belong to anyone? If you want to talk about how much money it makes, then talk about that. If you want to talk about what they accomplish on the field, talk about that. If you want to talk about the ratio of t-shirts sold to TV ratings or the ratio of conference wins to "history awaits" billboards or anything else with an actual measure, those can be compared

What does it matter what something like a particular arm of an educational institution is "worth"? Are they going to start paying taxes? Will they take out a mortgage on the athletic department to build a modern football stadium? Is Anschutz going to buy them up and take them private? What does it even mean, besides some sort of subject for an article to be written about in the offseason?

Actually they still score well since they have a very nice arena with public debt service (courtesy of the taxpayers of the state, $3m each year). Pure profit on the suites.

If Saul wanted to make fun of a Kansas fan for paying for Mizzou sports, he could point to those living in Missouri and paying taxes.

I just skimmed the article. Are the real conferences expected to give the Big 12 permission to play a conference championship game in a few years?

It's always been an NCAA rule. Apparently the Big 12 swung it's dick around and got the rule changed.

Can't think of any other conference that wields that kind of power. Maybe the B1G.

All that 'power' and they couldn't even garner a spot in the first Playoff; despite having a team in the Top 4 for much of the second half of the college football season.

What a waste.

It should be exciting. They can call it the Holy War since the little private religious schools rule the conference in football.

I still can't figure out how 80% of the conference ended the season with a loss. That's almost impressive.

To be fair, they're a basketball conference. (See 5-7 record in Tourney this year)

Fun fact: the Big 12 is the ONLY conference in the HISTORY of college basketball to get 2/3 of the conference into the NCAA Tourney and not have a single team make it past the Sweet 16.

Now THAT is impressive.
