Game of Thrones Seasons 7-8

About to hit the 5000 post mark on the old thread, the first season 7 trailer today seems like the right time to start the final Game of Thones thread.

I'm going back to the original rules pre-2015. I don't think we need supervision or bannings. Just don't be a dick. Post anything you find online that hasn't aired yet inside of spoiler tags. That's pretty much it. I think we can all handle that...

For future us, 2015 thread is here: Link

Yeah, why would anybody outside of the north support Bran for king? Any of them who weren't at Winterfell for the NK battle wouldn't appreciate the whole zombie apocalypse thing, and nobody would understand the three-eyed raven reference. Let's see, some crippled kid we've never heard of wants to be king, and we should vote for him because psychobitch's hand, who has ****ed up everything he touched since she arrived in Westeros, is vouching for him? Seriously, WTF? Drogon could fly through that plot hole.

Because he is weak and relatively hands off. If you are a powerful noble and get to elect a King and you know other powerful nobles won't vote for you because you are powerful then you vote for the weakest one because they will not be able to threaten your power.

With the North going independent Bran has no power base outside the capital.

Good finale. Well acted & written and hit all the feels. Nice job of offering some much needed levity with the council and the new king. Could have been much more powerful if more episodes showed Dany's decent into madness and Jon's conflict been the women he loves and the mad queen she's become.

But all in all a good way to end the series.

GRRM says the endings are the same for the major characters in the books as the TV. This means GRMM wanted......

Cersi and Jamie to die in a collapsed building
Jon to kill Danerys
Jon to be north of the wall
Bran to be King
Tyrion to be the hand
North to be separated
Sansa to be Queen
Arya to go explore the unknown world

You don't like the ending, vent your hate at GRMM. He may not agree on how they got there, but where they ended up, its all GRMM.

I think it's highly debatable that all of those are definitely GRRM's idea.

I can see that, but I doubt if it was the message the idiot writers were going for. It was just dumb.

The bolded sentences make this a pretty hard sell. Coupled with the rest of the Stark family nopeing out of the kingdom directly after Bran is elected. I just don't get it.... this is just begging for another civil war in the near future...

Ive said before, if grrm finishes the books or finds someone to finish it for him, we'll better appreciate the last 2 seasons. The politicking is much more interesting for books vs TV anyway, especially since if rather grrm do that then D&d. But the battle of kings landing, the heel turn and the destruction of kings landing, the kings landing rubble, and the final 10 minutes... Those will make for stunning visuals once the books set those scenes up better. The showrunners seemed to emphasize giving the huge moments spectacular TV while giving the moments in between and character development short shrift. Given the need to wrap this thing up, it could have been better... But I'm ok with that.

With the North going independent Bran has no power base outside the capital.

All absolutely true, but the North went independent AFTER Bran had received the approval votes of most or all of the Southern houses.

But let's face it, unless Bran can Warg into Drogon, he's going to have his hands full with wannabe usurpers, starting with his own Master of Coin.

All that said, all those usupers need to batten down their own power base. It's not like Bronn walks in and everyone in the region that had pledged fealty to House Tyrell for all those years quickly bends the knee. Will take years to sort it all out. Years that Bran might be able to use to his advantage if he's politically adept (WHICH WE HAVE NO PROOF WHATSOEVER OF).

I have no reason to believe GRRM would spoil his books in such a way. If he really did say that, I feel like it's more of a move to support the show than to actually basically give up how he's going to end the book story. Why buy the books if you already know how they're going to end, much less how they end having a so-so reaction from the fans?

He has said "major" characters multiple times. At least 3 times publicly in the last few months, including on 60 minutes just a few weeks ago. I guess you can quibble over who GRMM considers a "major" character. So who are your "major" characters?

Martin must have some serious shit in store for book Sansa, because she's still a useless weepy bitch at the end of Book 5. All of the Bolton/Winterfell/Theon stuff was happening to a completely separate character.

Exactly how I saw it. In fact, I joked about the final, believing the throne may have melted earlier during the battle ( which I asked here). Then I thought they'd become a republic or elected govt. I really didn't expect them to use an elected system—was just joking here at home at the time. But alas, it did happen like that and like you said, baby-steps.
