Look at it from his perspective. There isn't a team out there that he's going to join....start right away and put up huge numbers. So he can go to Chicago....collect a paycheck and maybe have a chance to start (if Hanie completely flops). After this season he'll be a FA. If he goes to a team, starts and looks like shit.....that hurts his value more than going to Chicago and playing backup.

Orton has no say in his next destination
Posted by Mike Florio on November 23, 2011, 2:11 PM EST
Denver Broncos v Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

Rosenthal pointed out earlier today that John Clayton of ESPN has said that quarterback Kyle Orton is trying to make it known that he wouldn’t report to the Chiefs, if the Chiefs claim him on waivers.

But Orton really has no say in the matter.

For starters, he’d forfeit the balance of his $4.5 million salary in 2011. Also, he’d be subject to an attack on any remaining signing bonus allocation for 2011.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Orton could jeopardize his shot at free agency in 2012.

As best we currently understand the rules, the Chiefs would be able to send Orton a five-day letter, if he doesn’t show. And if within five days after getting the letter he still doesn’t arrive, the Chiefs can put him on the reserve/left squad list, which would shut Orton down for the rest of the year.

The biggest question is whether his contract would toll. Though players must show up by Week 10 to get credit for a contract year, the rules are a little fuzzier when it comes to guys who walk out in lieu of holding out.

These are all questions Orton needs to answer before deciding to breach his contract, since he needs to understand all aspects of the worst-case scenario. And any team that is tempted to claim Orton simply to keep him from landing in Chicago should be considering these questions as well, given the chance that the Bears could be blocked from getting Orton without the new team incurring a single cent, if Orton is serious about not showing up.

No....we would collect a comp pick for losing him in FA.

Anything to avoid watching a Palko-led Chiefs team for the next 6 games...

Hell, Orton comes and throws 10+ INT's in his 6 games as a Chief, so what? At least Baldwin, Bowe and Breaston will be able to run routes further than 3 yards off the Line of Scrimmage for a change.

I guess the point would be that if the Chiefs think they can still make a run at the playoffs, then they would sign him because he would be an upgrade over Tyler Palko.

I don't think the Chiefs will make the playoffs with Orton, so I don't see the point in claiming him.

I disagree. KC is a team that the QB situation is far from locked down. Maybe even DC which I heard could also be interested. There is a almost a third of a season left. He would have lower risk going to a mediocre team and winning a few games than a playoff contender and possibly being expected to save their season.

A knock on Orton is that he has no heart so if he goes the route you are stating then I completely believe that reputation is well earned and will get even more entrenched.

if we claim him we own his rights. If a certain team really wants him then we can make a deal without us having to sign him to anything. If he wants to sit out the year we would own his rights.

Colts explored trading for Orton before season

Colts explored trading for Orton before season
Posted by Mike Florio on November 23, 2011, 1:18 PM EST
Denver Broncos v Tennessee Titans Getty Images

Before the Colts convinced Kerry Collins to come out of retirement in August, the Colts kicked around the idea of acquiring another quarterback who suddenly has become available.

Per a league source, the Colts explored the possibility of trading for former Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton.

Orton, who was so close to being traded to the Dolphins that (we’re told) his plane tickets had been purchased, was waived on Tuesday by the Broncos. And the 0-10 Colts have ultimate dibs on his rights between now and 4:00 p.m. ET.

According to the source, it’s highly unlikely that the Colts will make a claim for Orton now.

One of the primary reasons for reluctance is the Colts’ remaining cap space of $3.0 million. With Orton due to receive $1.588 million in base pay over the balance of the season (contrary to the $2.5 million number that has been making the rounds), adding Orton would make it harder for the Colts to account for any other moves they may need to make.

That said, it’s impossible to rule out the possibility that the Colts simply don’t want to change anything, in the hopes of getting another quarterback in April. From a pure football standpoint, Orton is better than any healthy quarterbacks the Colts currently have. From a practical standpoint, no one in the organization will be inclined to articulate that goal, publicly or privately.

Stopped you there. We all know that ain't happening. Even if Joe Montana came back, that ain't happening.

Thus my point again. They either get Orton for this season and beyond or they draft a QB. Or neither. But no way we draft a QB if we get Orton.

Wow. You said it again. What are you thinking here? NFL coaches and GMs are judged by wins and losses. They want to salvage what they can from this season to save face and save their jobs. They will sign a veteran QB to help them do that if they have to. That doesn't mean they're all in for Orton as their QBOTF.

Great, let's bring in a retread so that he can play just good enough to get the job next year.

That will lead Pioli to think that we don't need to draft a QB, thus continuing the cycle of shit.

Yay!
