Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs
Well, it looks like the deal is done.
https://twitter.com/intent/user?scre...w_p=tweetembed Jay Glazer @JayGlazer 49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith Jay Glazer @JayGlazer Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith. |

that's just it... in my quick/dirty bit of math, I assumed an average of 2.5 stick every year with the team for at least a year. that's NOT including those that sign but don't stick--if you double that, it's 230 since 1967. hell, it could even be more than that.

You'd have to prove it instead of speculate for me to believe that, especially since there have only been a total of 69 QB's taken in the seventh round since 1967. In rounds two, three and four you're talking 55, 57 and 67 respectively. I can't imagine a number like 230 guys making a roster as undrafted or late round picks, especially in the days when football players worked normal jobs out of season. |

Could you imagine if Staubach had signed with the Chiefs? Dawson and Staubach on the same roster? |

Take '13 as an example. In the draft, 11 QBs were selected. After the draft 19 UDFA QBs signed with teams. Multiply this out and consider the odds of becoming a "franchise QB" when starting as an UDFA are abysmal. |

It would have been a nice transition at the end of Dawson's career into Staubach's. Remember the only reason he lasted until he did was because he was a Naval officer and had to serve 5 years in Vietnam before he could play football.

God Almighty... from Dawson right into Staubach, that's as lucky as going from Manning to Luck.
And could've thrown in Sayers to boot. |

It costs teams a pittance to sign undrafted players as opposed to signing and drafting. In most cases, players barely get a signing bonus, if at all. |

Here is the chart with draft position.
Bart Starr in the 17th round is now a 6th round pick. Kind of helps put things more into light in terms of today's NFL. |
